Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged Oatmeal Stout with Vanilla Beans

A rare barrel-aged beer in a can from us! We got a few super-fresh Rye Whiskey barrels from our friends at Sagamore Spirits to age with oatmeal stout in. After four months, we moved it into a tank with a heap of Madagascar vanilla beans! The combination of char from the wood, caramel from the malt, and real vanilla gives it a delicious creme brulee impression!

Canned 2/18/2025, drunk 4/10/2025.
Clear, dark, small head.
Rich fudge and vanilla. Is this a 12% BA IS? Because it might as well be, in the best possible way! Rich, malty, very nicely-barreled with rich, spicy rye and no alcohol, since, you know, it's 6.8%.
Soft, chewy, rich, malty, good attenuation. BIG spicy rye. Gaining bitterness on the finish and lingering. But the soft vanilla bean soothes things while the fudgey malts help keep the balance. Definitely getting a ton of barrel, and I love that. Most of these "barrel-aged" lower/mid-gravity beers you scratch your head at and wonder if it actually was put in a barrel. Not so here! My first Sapwood and I think I'm about to embark upon a very fun journey with them...
