Matrimony is the latest in our band collab series, and comes courtesy of local post black metal titans Underdark. It was great to have so many of the band down for the brew day. And we’ve brewed up something really fun: Matrimony 4.8% Blackened West Coast IPA .
This beer takes all the classic bitterness, citrus and pine character of a West Coast IPA but softness it with the addition of dark malt extract. With Columbus, Amarillo, Chinook and Simcoe leaf in the copper, Simcoe Cryo at pitch and conditioned on Cascade and Columbus T90’s there are some pretty hefty hop additions providing citrus and pine flavours and that all important bitterness for this style.

Keg at West Riding Refreshment Rooms, Dewsbury - Black cola body, frothy tan head. Piney centre to this, burnt malts and citrus zest give it a robust character, just a little too fizzy for my liking.

Keg at Ealing Beer Fest 25. Darkest brown. Thick foamy beige head. Aroma is full of pineapple. Flavourwise it's tangy and fruity. Some underlying bitterness. Light-medium bodied. Slick verging on creamy. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Just doesn't don't for me.

Keg at the 34th Ealing Beer Festival 2025, day one, 09/07/2025.
Extremely dark mahogany brown topped with a good sized lasting beige head.
Nose is roast malts, cocoa powder, light charr, pine nip.
Taste comprises ashen bite, roasted tones, cola cubes, pine nibble, light tropical undertones.
Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying close punctured with earthy hop bitterness.
Not bad.

Draught keg at the Real Ale Classroom, Leicester city centre. Colour is mid- to dark brown, a bit hazy with a small uneven buff/khaki head. Aroma of black malts, some chocolate, a good bit of pine. Taste is sweet, some citrus edging it's way around the piney character. Tiny bit of hop oil bitterness in the finish. Light to medium body and carbonation. A less emphatic Black IPA than many, bit a good representation of the style nonetheless.
