one of the best christmas beers ive had, and one ive waited awhile to find, but well worth the wait. black like a porter, smell is malty sweet with a little spice so as not to be cloying. a little roasty, the spice combines with everything instead of dominating the flavor. wonderful.

12 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with some ruby hints. The aroma is toffee, vanilla, figs, and some warm, brandy notes. The flavor is dark, fruity sweetness, with a mild bitterness balancing nicely. The palate is medium, syrupy, sticky, and acidic. The aftertaste is fairly sour, and fades quickly. Overall, this is an interesting and tasty beer, but the mouthfeel is lacking.

Black olive nose. Clear garnet, medium yellow head, good lacing. Tea and black olive flavor. I had this before when it was fresher, but I didn’t log a rating at that time. This time around, which isn’t that long from the release, is not so good. It had a more malty and spicy charcter, but now it is dominated by olives. Ok beer, but tragically short shelf life.

Draught, Toronado, San Francisco. Dark reddish brown affair with a smallish tan head. Nose and flavour showed traces of roasted malt, dark fruit, nuts and a hint of spice. Slight hop bitterness with a touch of tartness towards the finish. Quite enjoyable.

Some corner store six-pack ($11): Pours a transparent brown color with a beige head. Aroma is malty with a good amount of hops. In fact, the hops were a surprise in this beer, as I expected it to be far more malty. If anything, the hops might have balanced it to far in that direction. Alcohol was not perfectly covered either, especially with the spicy Jamaican food that I was eating with this beer. I guess it was the wrong food combination for this beer, but nevertheless the flaws of the beer became apparent with the pairing.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 12/11/10

Aroma: The nose has caramel, nuts, dark roasted malts, fruits, spice, and a little earthy hops
Appearance: It pours a dark mahogany color with a small beige head and some light lace
Flavor: Smooth and malty, some sweetness, roasty, touch of spice, earthy hops for balance
Palate: Quite smooth and drinkable with a warming (but boozy) mouthfeel, and a medium-full body
Overall Impression: This was a pretty impressive winter seasonal beer. You really can't help but like it, it just feels like it was made for this season. It's certainly more on the sweet side then the bitter, but it has a touch of bitterness for that much needed balance. Overall, this is a very solid beer indeed.

Pours bright black into an English pint. Mocha head recedes to skim surface leaving spotted sheets. Chocolate fruit cake aromas. Full with chocolate, caramel and a lasting bitter resin finish. First Full Sail...Tastes like a Geary’s HSA.
