12 oz bottle into English pint. Aromas of caramel malt, bread, cinnamon rolls and alcohol. Pours brown with a diminishing head and mediocre lace containing big bubbles. Taste is a little more bitter than most winter warmers and there’s a definite malt backbone to balance things out. Nice sweet aftertaste. Carbonation is a little too low. Medium bodied. Not bad, but doesn’t even come close to the quality in the Laughing Dog Cold Nose I had last night.

10th October 2008. GABF. Clear brown beer. Dry palate. A bit over spiced this winter beer and the palate is a bit too dry.

Pours a dark mahogany, with a bright white, sudsy lace - nose of raisin, date, tobacco, chocolate, some earthy, oxidized character - the flavor is dry spices and herbs up front, followed by some cocoa character - a wee bit of tartness, and even a subtle oakiness precedes some toffee, roasted nuts, tobacco - touches of nutmeg - finishes warming, with a sudden but welcome kick of hops - a nicely balanced ale, and at 6.50 a six pack, you can’t go wrong.

Not my favorite ESA. 2008 Bottle. Pours with a extremely large, light brown head. Extremely dark brown body. Good lacing. Aroma of roasted nuts, meat, cinnamon, spices, hay and a few persimmons. Taste is rotten fruits, a bit metallic, some spices, oatmeal, raisins, a bit of alcohol and a couple of weak hops. Creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation.

12oz bottle-pours a big foamy retaining tan head that laces and brownish/orange color. Aroma is dark malt, dark fruit, secondary spicy/citrus hops. Taste is dark malt, dark fruit, secondary spicy-peppery, alcohol, seems to be medium body but also a bit thin. Good carbonation. This is all about the aroma, although the taste is solid winter ale. Thanks to Joe-jwc215/wasatch.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Degarth. Pours deep amber with assertive bubbly to creamy tan head. The aroma is a mixture of highly roasted malts, mild dark fruity esters, molasses and an herbal note. Overall the aroma is pretty light. The taste is just like the aroma with roasty malts, mild dark fruity esters, some mild coffee, chocolate malts and a bold brash earthiness. These notes create an enjoyable superposition of flavors. Certainly a nice warm up during the winter.

Bottle. Pours a very dark ruby color with a medium light tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is a roasted malt with some fruit. Good lacing on the glass. The taste is a very sweet malt with a spicy hop finish. A great ale for the winter.

Dark brown color. Some aroma of caramel. Strong caramel flavor, but smooth enough; caramel finish, sharp. Monodimensional but drinkable.

Bottle. Poured dark brown with a lasting white head. Aroma of hops. Nice hoppy flavour with enough malt to cut the bite. Pleasant finish with a touch of roast.
