Bottle at home, from HOTM online, 21/06/23. Black with a good sized khaki head that thins to a swirl and edgeing. Nose is dark malts, spice, fruit cake mix, molasses, mellow scotch barrel, figs, dates, burnt toffee. Taste comprises fruit cake mix, dark chocolate, spice, booze, molasses, subtle barrel, figgy jam, toffee, light oak, lightly singed brown sugars. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced kiss of alcohol and well checked whisky edge. Decent sipper.

The sixteenth Black Damnation, one from the ‘second generation’ in this project, Black Albert aged on Glenlivet barrels. Bottle from Dranken De Moor. Creamy and initially dense, very regular, grey-beige head, dissipating in the middle and eventually – due to the lack of carbonation – disappearing altogether; jet black robe. Intense bouquet of melting bitter black chocolate, obvious and pronounced Glenlivet whisky, coffee liqueur, old wet wood, beef stock, fresh paint, dry peat, salmiak or even liquorish candy, tea bags, black pepper, espresso, cigar tobacco, vanilla-scented wet oak, burnt toast. Densely sweetish onset (candied prunes) with a dry beef stock- and dried porcini-like umami factor (quite pronounced) as well as a dimly sourish undercurrent, soft carb as is typical for this second series and explicitly announced on the front label, very oily, viscous, thick and syrupy body. Deep toasted nut- and black chocolate-like maltiness, becoming a bit powdery and even ashy towards the finish, with a strong roasted chicory-like bitterness, coffeeish and drying with the dryness further enhanced by woody tannins, a firm dosage of spicy hops, a powdery yet not overwhelming peat accent and, of course, a very single malt whisky-like flavour and heat in the tail, with a lingering smoky note (tobacco). A bit too much on the boozy side to be truly great, like most others in this series, but that is a minor criticism, of course: this is still Struise at the top end of their boldness and richness, and even if I found several other of these second wave BDs better, I enjoyed this to the last drop.

bottle 1246/2000 pitch dark, nearly no head. aroma is wood, hard roasted malts, fainter nutty bitterness. flavor is bourbon (yea i know, glenlivet not supposed to taste like that), wood, bitterness from wood, also i think bitterness from quite a lot of hops, or perhaps it just tastes like that. faint smoke and charred wood (probably the glenlivet). tastes like it's been on wood for a long, long time.

Bottle from Sterk Avondverkoop, Amsterdam, shared with the KL tasting crew. Poured a clear dark brown with a short-lived frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, toffee apple caramel, liqouirce, vanilla. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth rich oily malt, fruity, liqouirce light boozy alcohol bitter palate. Full to medium bodied with flat carbonation.
