Overt coffee and rich malt. Pours black with a massive brown head that lingers well. Roast and coffee dominate flavor with a slight fruitiness (dark fruits) on the end. Moderate bittering, could be a little from the roast. A very slight sourness appears in this beer, which is nice. Coffee is a little overpowering.

2016 re-rate: Huge Indonesian nose still present. Lots of french press notes. Roasted cacao nibs. More baker’s chocolate on the palate. Bone dry, espresso. Dry finish that lingers like a nice 80% cacao bite. Old rating: 355ml bottle shared with Marcus in January 2015 from Old Town in Louisville. Poured into a shaker pint. Oil black with a big soapy tan head. Huge dark-roasted Indonesian coffee aromas with undertones of toasted oats, smoke and slight earthiness. Taste is more of the same with the roasted coffee again dominating. Slight vanilla and dark fruit tastes emerge as it comes to room temperature. Creamy mouthfeel and full-bodied with a dry bitter smoky finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Java Stout on 16 Dec 2015 at 14:51 - Score: 7

Poured into a shaker showing oily black with dark copper translucent rims and half a finger of coffee colored foam. The coffee does show but it’s a sideshow compared to the very dominant grassy aromas emanating from this beer. The palate is full bodied, with extremely even carbonation, immediately showing the dark coffee flavors without any of the tartness, and a very elegant dark chocolate bitterness on the end. The coffee linger on the finish is very long. Actually very similar to drinking a nice black coffee. Delicious!

12 ounce bottle. Pours an opaque black color topped by a small dense creamy tan head. Aroma is rich with notes of roasted malt, charred wood and dark coffee. First sip yields a bittersweet roasted malt flavor that has lot’s of coffee flavor. Slightly smoky and intensely bitter. Resiny hops are certainly there as well. A huge stout full of flavor, yet very drinkable. The finish is chewy and bitter with more smokiness. Outstanding.

Poured from 355mL bottle. Dark black with tan head. Aroma of very strong coffee/espresso beans with very subtle dark chocolate in the background. Taste of ash, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is much more balanced than the aroma. Light creamy texture. Medium full body.

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade.
The appearance was a pitch black body, half finger white head that quickly dies and has some light trickling around the sides of the glass.
The smell had dark roasted coffee beans, super light chocolate.
The taste had some bittersweetness and combined very well through the previously mentioned flavors, bitter aftertaste, dry finish.
The palate was about a medium, fairly sessionable, smooth, ABV wasn’t felt.
Overall, I think this was a very well done for a coffee-forward American Stout.

Bottle received by Secret Santa (Summer 2013). Thank you jsquire! Pours dark reddish brown with a small reddish mocha head that doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty and tiny fruity with roasted malts, espresso coffee, bitter chocolate, ash, burnt wood, sweet liquorice hard candy, moist soil and hay. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, tiny sour and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, moist soil, burnt wood, coffee hard candy, hay, burnt caramel and hints of cocoa powder. Bottle - Dark roast coffee bean and some chocolate. Jet black with a rich brown head. Dark roast coffee and roast malts. There is a bitter finish, but appropriate for the coffee. Nice, but all coffee.
