Our Trippel has always been a big, beautiful Belgian-style ale, but in 2015, we tweaked the recipe to include a new yeast variety and even more complex malt profile. This golden beer opens with a bold blast of spicy Noble hops, courtesy of Saaz and Hallertau Mittlefruh, and gives way to the fruity aromas offered by our traditional Belgian yeast. Brewed with Pilsner and Munich malts, Trippel is classically smooth and complex, and sings with a high-note of sweet citrus before a pleasantly dry finish delivers a warm, strong boozy bite. Aroma: The nose is Belgian yeast, spice, wheat, plus some light fruit and earth notes
Appearance: Pours a clearish golden color with a bubbly white head and medium-heavy lace
Flavor: The taste is medium sweet, lots of yeast flavors and a little caramel malts, minimal bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it gets a little bit sticky mid-palate, and finishes with a touch of dryness
Overall Impression: Overall, I thought this was a fairly on-style Trippel. I like the way this one works. It is well-made, and reasonably complex without really going in the wrong direction. I could have used a touch more bitterness to balance out the sweetness, but that is a minor gripe. Overall, this one is very solid.

22oz bottle, all to myself. Poured a golden color with a huge frothy white head. Aroma is clean malts, coriander notes, yeast, lemon. Mouthfeel is relatively light, a touch creamy. Very drinkable, extremely enjoyable.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a clear golden color with a thin fizzy offwhite head. Poor head retention. Aroma of bready malts, candi sugar, spices, banana and a hoppy finish. The taste is bready malts, spices, burnt sugar, bananas and a mildly hoppy finish. Medium-full bodied.

Banana and peach aroma. Crystal clear golden thin head. Dry. Weak peach flavor at midpalate. Rice finish.Thinnish for the style. Alcohol not detected, which is good, because not much flavor was either. Weak pale ales are one thing, but a tripel with the intensity of a lager is just wrong.

12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into my Chimay Trappist glass. Pours a clear pale yellow with about 1 finger of white head. Aroma of fermented fruit and a little spice. Taste is medium sweet. Medium bodied with a thick yet oily texture. Lively carbonation and a long sweet finish. Overall, not too bad. A little sweet for my taste but drinkable nonetheless.

Whole Foods, P st DC 650ml ($5): Pours a golden color with a dissipating white head and the thinnest trace of lacing. Aroma is floral, slightly boozy, coriander, and sugar. Taste is rather sweet. There be a little bit of hops around the finish. A bit of that Belgian dryness is present as well. Ultimately, while this is a clean and well-balanced ale, it is a forgettable addition to the style. Easy to drink, but that’s about it.

Tap at Brew Haven festival.Musty yeast/bread, spice, and citrus aroma. Yellow with a white head. Bread, citrus and spice flavor. Light bodied.

Tap. Old orange malt, yeast, and light alcohol aroma. Golden yellow color with small head. Sweet-tart orange malt and bitter/astringent alcohol flavor. Okay - pretty smooth.

Not sure when the "bold blast of hops" that opens the beer appears. I finished my glass forty minutes ago, and I’m still waiting. Should come around some time, I guess. Surprisingly bland, forgettable Tripel; seeing as these guys use "Belgium" in their brewery’s name, you’d think they’d nail such a popular style. Not so. Ugly as all get out, clear and headless and laceless and with way-too-large pores, this beer only continues to disappoint as you drink it; bearable to begin with, it grows cloy and saccharine, only worsened by its undercarbonation. Luckily for New Belgium, I dislike this beer, which means it will be hugely popular.

12 oz. bottle, pours clear golden with a small white head. Aroma of sweet apples, citrus, yeast, and some fruity esters. Flavour of sweet light fruits and yeast. Not as complex as other tripels, but still well made.
