Our friends over at Kentucky’s own Willett Distillery have one kind of barrel: wood. And they put two things in them: Bourbon and Rye. We were fortunate enough to get some of their Bourbon barrels, and we put a special coffee-fied version of our Imperial Stout in them.

On tap at Town Hall. Pours near black with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of bourbon with strong coffee and dark grains and roasted malts supporting. Flavor has bitter dark grains, coffee and bourbon with a hint of roast underlying.

On Tap Black with a thin tan head. Dark roast and boozy bourbon aromas and flavors. Plenty of sweetness but still well attenuated. Lingering dark roast caramelized sweetness and a long lingering ABV burn. Very good.

Bottle from QClub at home. Dark dark brown pour with thin light tan head. Aroma is big and boozy, with toasted marshmallow, coffee, dark fruit. So much bourbon barrel age flavors that it almost becomes the defining characteristic. Taste is huge vanilla bourbon and dark fruit. Very straightforward and giant bourbon barrel aged stout - good. Would get again.

Rancorous beast of a stout, boozy and decadent and massive, full of rich chocolate and heavy oak and tons o' rye. Starts with layers upon layers of cocoa and molasses, then picks up anise and vanilla notes before the whiskey and wood take over on the back end. Finishes bittersweet with oak and plenty of liquor warmth. Not much coffee, but likely the java gets somewhat masked by the ample rye. Chocolate liqueur nose is good, and the pour comes out a viscous black with a thin but persistent brown head and modest lacing. Texture's rich and warm, but at 12.6% it should be. Good now, could probably use a few seasons in the basement.
