Mum/Mumme is an old German Ale, very popular as an export beer to Britain in the days of old. Like all beers, it changed throughout the centuries. We based this on herbs and additions described in a 19th century book, which was probably erroneous anyway!

The result is almost barley-wine or quad-like, but with some hints of spice and savoury that give it an unusual twist. We like!

The brethren provideth. Opaque mahogany brown. Foamy beige head thins out. Aroma is punchy and herbal. Bitter but with a medicinal sweetness. Roots. Smoke. Reminds me of something like Dandelion & Burdock. Flavourwise the sweetness is not present... at least on initial introductions. Herbal with smoky streak. Bitter. Medicinal. Sweetness then appears. Not full-on. Medium bodied. Slick to oily. Average carbonation. Ultimately, it makes me think of a Yule spiced ESB. A punchy one. Decent. (And I have just noticed that blurb on the bottle mentions that Mumme were expected to Britain back in the day, having mentioned Chrimbo beers.)
