Nice experiment from MishMash. Met this brewery at Carnivale Brettanomyces and took some of their bottles home. One bottle with Belgian abbey yeast and one with Brett yeast. Otherwise same ingredients. Tasted both versions together.
Color: Both exactly the same: Brown-orangish red, reddish off-white head.
Aroma: Abbey yeast: Fruity blueberry notes, biscuits, yeasty esters. Brett yeast: Stable-like Brett funk, hints of fruity Blueberry. More interesting.
Taste: Abbey yeast: Quite complex mix of fruity blueberry notes, Belgian yeast esters (light hints of banana, some clove), malty, biscuit, hints of caramel. Moderate to over moderate sweet, very light mitterness going toward moderate hopbitterness at the dry-ish finish. Spicy hints. Nice complexity. Brett yeast: Leathery Brett, hints of fruity blueberry, biscuit, malty, more rounded (a bit less) hopbitterness at the finish.
Final verdict: Being a Brett lover, there could only be one winner, I thought. The Brett one, of course. But I was surprised that the Brett outfaded the complexity of the abbey yeast version. In numbers: Abbey yeast 7 7 7 7 7.5 = 7.1 Brett yeast 7 7.5 7.5 7 7 = 7.3. Close finish. As said before: Nice experiment from this brewer.
