Description
The seed for Glassdrumman Cider was sown in 1969. My grandfather made a batch of cider in old Lucozade bottles and I can still remember the first sip on a hot summer afternoon. Fast forward to 1988 and the deserts of the Middle East. Thirsty and desperate, my attempts to make cider by re-fermenting apple juice produced many sore heads and some dangerously exploding bottles. It took another 15 years before 60 traditional Irish apple trees were planted on the north east slope of a County Down drumlin and 4 more years until there were enough apples to start the process. With professional help, the 17 different varieties of apples were milled, pressed and allowed to ferment. The resulting cider was stored for 15 months to mature and develop a rich, mellow flavour. The finished bottled cider has a distinctive fruity taste, and is crisp and refreshing for the dry and mellow and soft for the sweet. It took 40 odd years for the seed to mature so I hope you enjoy the end result, Glassdrumman Cider.
