Bottle. Gentian root and light chocolate malt aroma. Black color with slight head. Bitter sweet gentian, mild smoked ham, and chocolate malt flavor. Nice body and blending. Unique.

Tap from source. Tangerine and pine/grapefruit peel aroma. Slightly hazy golden yellow color with moderate head. Slightly sweet orange, earthy malt and moderately bitter grapefruit peel hops flavor. Body a bit light. Flat 12 brews some great pale ales.

Draft. Deep brown body with a frothy tan head, mostly lasting. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, nuts, dark chocolate with a hint of caramel. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery turning smooth texture, moderate carbonation. Dry finish with a slight metallic taste. the dominant tastes are roast and coffee with undertones of chocolate. Nice.

Sample at Twenty Tap in Indianapolis. The beer is a clear copper color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to a film. Short stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and pine. Medium body with flavors of piney hops, citrus and earthy malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a resiny hops aftertaste. Above average overall.
