The second of the Zeliv beers to hit BC (this time @ Brewery Creek). They are top-fermented Czech ales, all to pre-1842 styles (which were all rendered extinct in the decades following the debut of Pilsner). I wasn’t keen on the braggot Castulus but let’s see where Gottschalk takes us.

Dull amber colour, no head and very little in the way of visible carbonation. Aroma has a somewhat heavy maltiness (hints at caramel, date sugar, that unpleasant white sugar note) with plenty of esters (plum, pear, nopales). Flavour is sweet, body flat. It has a very honeyish character, with hints of caramel. Again, I’m getting a sort of white sugar off-note in there as well. Sticky, chewy, mild datey, plummy notes. I had this Chinese drink once, it was basically a smoked plum juice. That’s in there, too. Finish is a bit watery and still very sweet, but with a light Saaz note. These brews, while of tremendous historical interest, unfortunately do not tickle the tastebuds they way I’d hoped they would.

bottle, bought at Pivni Galerie. Amber colour, tiny head. Very fruity and malty, only slightly hopped. A bit thin and watery, though. Dry finish.

Flat, hazy, dull amber. No head. Looks like shit. Sugary aroma is caramelly, grahamcrackery in accent. Smells like a Soviet brew without the sewage. Very sweet flavour...more graham cracker, cheapo honey and caramel taste. Very little nuance...like the cheapest of the above you can find. Bland, unimpressive...too bad since the bottle and price make this a potential dark horse and it just doesn’t capitalize.

Bottle (bought at Galerie piva, Praha): Deep amber coloured, no head to speak of, clear; bready, sour doughy nose with some fruitiness; mainly sweet flavour, quite light bodied; delicate finish: bread - mixed with some molasses or sugars - alcohol and an almost hidden bitterness very late. No pleasure, czech brewers should keep on brewing excellent Pilseners............

Bottled (BB 06/2006)
Honey golden, hazy color, not much head. Honey and yeast in the nose. Flat mouthfeel. Honey and butterscotch dominate the flavor. Almost mead-like brew.

Bottled. Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Very sweet sugary aroma. Sugary flavour, with also hops and malts. Sweet aftertaste. Fullbodied, and rather sweet beer, but indeed a very pleasant one.

Clear orange body. Nose of perfume and some vinegar, but not ordinary vinegar, rather wine vinegar. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Medium to fully bodied. Not really my type of beer.

Dark-red amber beer; very slightly pinkish tinted head. Nose fully reminiscent of parsley - is this a CHERRY beer? Saponines? Very faraway fruit taste, indeed cherry, but I get parsley again. And I’m not dreaming nor stone-drunk, as diabel is tasting with me and confirms my impression. In fact, rather than cherry, I’d say cherry flavoured cherry gums. Light, with a slight syrupy slickness. Surprising; let’s give it the advantage of a first try in a country that isn’t used to experiment with beer...
