Description
Staropramen Brewery's history begins in 1869 when a corporation was formed on September 6, 1869, The brewery building was completed and beer first brewed in 1871 and the brand name Staropramen, literally meaning “old spring”, was registered in 1911.
Extensive modernization took place from 1933 to 1937 lead by masterbrewer Josef Paspa. The fermentation rooms with cooling vessels and large wooden barrels were replaced with modern steel tanks. In 1933, thanks to its volume of 800,000 hl of produced beer, the brewery became the biggest brewery in Czechoslovakia.
With socialism after the Second World War Staropramen was nationalised. After socialism ended in 1989, the brewery, along with the Braník and Měšťan breweries, became in 1992 part of the Prague Breweries group (Pražské Pivovary), which by 1996 came under control of the Bass company. Bass brought Ostravar into the group in 1997, then in 2000 sold its brewing operations to Interbrew, later AB InBev. In April 2012, Staropramen was bought by Molson Coors

33cl bottle brought back from Prague. Amber colour with thin white head. Some toasted malt, bit of toffee aroma. Very clean and crisp in mouth. Hoppy bite on the end. Some good flavours of toffee and hop, but doesn’t really offer much else.

500ml bottle from Prague. Black beer with thin beige head. Lots of dark choc on aroma, coffee creme too. Fullish in mouth although somewhat watery, with a smokey ash flavour on the end. More coffee/choc/cream flavours in the mouth. Dusty and ashy though on the end. Not keen on the ash or the cream elements of this

Bottled from Tesco at £1 for 500ml you cannot really complain at that price as it’s certainly on a par with similar standard lagers of this type. light golden coloured, not much aroma, easy drinking, nothing special ok lager.

07-06-03 Had a very nice pint of this in a little cellar bar jazz club on the castle side of the river in Prague. A black beer with creamy white head, nice roasted tast and burnt malt flavours. A very smooth good stout.

Coffee aroma and coffee flavor in this black beer. Off white head. Medium palate. More or less a light oatmeal stout. Not bad but the Czechs do lagers better.

Light Gold. Very light malt and Chemical aroma, and more of the same in the flavor. Lightly bitter. Some corn as well. Not really bad, just nothing to enjoy.
