Description
Staropramen Brewery's history begins in 1869 when a corporation was formed on September 6, 1869, The brewery building was completed and beer first brewed in 1871 and the brand name Staropramen, literally meaning “old spring”, was registered in 1911.

Extensive modernization took place from 1933 to 1937 lead by masterbrewer Josef Paspa. The fermentation rooms with cooling vessels and large wooden barrels were replaced with modern steel tanks. In 1933, thanks to its volume of 800,000 hl of produced beer, the brewery became the biggest brewery in Czechoslovakia.

With socialism after the Second World War Staropramen was nationalised. After socialism ended in 1989, the brewery, along with the Braník and Měšťan breweries, became in 1992 part of the Prague Breweries group (Pražské Pivovary), which by 1996 came under control of the Bass company. Bass brought Ostravar into the group in 1997, then in 2000 sold its brewing operations to Interbrew, later AB InBev. In April 2012, Staropramen was bought by Molson Coors

Bottled. Copper coloured, beige mediumsized foamy head. Hayish malty nose with caramellish hints. Malty hayish flavour with caramellish hints. Feels thick in mouth. Good brew, and wellbalanced.

Bottle. Dark copper with off-white head. A disappointing aroma, mostly light malty. More interesting flavour, with roasted elements and some licorice that hides in the background. There’s also caramel in the flavour. Nice hops towards the end. (050929)

(Nitrogen can) Amber coloured with a creamy head. The aroma was hard to get hold of. The flavour was burnt rubber and dry, roasty malt. Some bitterness on the finish.

Bottled, 5%. Golden colour, small white bubbly head. Hayish malty aroma and same in flavour, along with hops. Kind of cheap-o feeling over this one... 3 2 4 2 6

Mostly lasting head, nice amber colour, moderat week aroma, OK flavour. Rerated as 6-3-6-3-11 june-11 2006 without knowing previus rating. So my tasting powers are still intact.

(bottle) Clear and pale golden colour with a medium foamy white head. Cookie malt aroma with hints of floral hops. Somewhat crispy mouthfeel but this one lacks a bit character compared to its Czech counterparts. Anyway it has a nice bitterhoppy finish.
