12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 1/20/2015. Pours slightly cloudy reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, nuttiness, light chocolate, plum, apple, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness, light chocolate, light apple/plum, herbal, and yeast toasted earthiness. Light-moderate earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and some light earthy hop astringency lingering after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a nice English brown ale. All around good robustness, balance, and complexity of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth to drink. If it lacked the hop astringency it would have scored higher. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden orange with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a decent amount of resin and grass with an earthy grain backbone. Flavor has notes of resin and pine with and a touch of earthy grain.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 2/25/2014. Pours fairly clear deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, dark bread, chocolate, herbal, light pine, light pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good complexity and solid balance of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. A light metallic note is present in the aromas as well. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, dark bread, chocolate, herbal, light pine, light pepper, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, dark bread, chocolate, light pepper/pine, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity and solid balance of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness balance and minimal cloying flavors after the finish. Some light metallic/astringency in the taste, but not overpowering. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice English strong ale. All around good complexity, robustness, and solid balance of dark/bready malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. I felt this could have been better if it were less hoppy, but was a nicely enjoyable offering otherwise.

Pours very dark brown with a slight light tan head. Aroma of dark roasty malt with hints of cinnamon. Full bodied. Flavor is dark chocolaty roasty malt with cinnamon mild spice and some vanilla. It’s an earthy chocolaty brew - think Mexican style chocolate. Tasty stuff.

Draft pour many times over the years. Pours a cloudy banana orange color with a patchy head. Soft, sweet fruit aroma. Flavor is very grainy, with hints of tropical fruit throughout. Not a very enjoyable beer for me, but I’ll take it over its common competition most days. Gets old, but not horrible.

Bottle from Haggen Grocery
Hazy dark amber color with small head. Caramelly brew, the flavor is a bit oxidized, the aroma is bready and yeasty, traces of vegetables.
Imprecise.
