Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of nice liquorice notes with some light fruity notes which mix well with some light black chocolates notes. Taste is also dominated by some liquorice notes which are well-balanced by some black chocolate notes with some light roasted malt with some light fruity notes also noticeable. Body is semi-full for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I really enjoyed the liquorice notes and the creamy texture of this beer.

Tap at Q-Brick. Shiny black with lace. Nose of blueberries, chocolate, a bit roasty; fruity and phenolic. Rather mild flavor (counldn’t believe it was 10%). Hides its alcohol well, but then again, doesn’t carry a 10% flavor either. Sweet and fruity, and too phenolic for me, with lots of cocoa. Not very imperial.

Sound’s Ursus Speleaus, 10% on tap at world beer & cafe Qbrick’s Strong Beer Event. This beer pours a pitch black with a light tan creamy head. The aroma is umami & overhelmingly licorice with light cacao powder notes. The taste is similar, this is the most licorice I’ve evr gotte in a beer. As it warms up more coffee notes come through. If you like black licorice you’ll love this beer!

Bottle from Legacy Liquor, Vancouver
Muddy light amber color with medium sized head. Hop aroma, intense, fruity; but also some cheese and yeast. Good body strength; round mouthfeel; the caramel flavor is moderately sweet, with a toffee accent; strong bitterness; the hops contribute with strong resins and some orangey fruitiness; also the flavor has a trace of cheesy yeast.
Good but rough, unclean; if refined, could be very good, because the good hops are there.

bourbon, sweet malty, but lacking depth. Boozy. Doesn’t go anywhere fast. Sugary finish. I had a Brouwers, along with numerous other BA beers and this was the weak link.

22 oz. bottle, pours a mostly clear orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma of resinous hops and caramel malts - smells pretty simplistic. Flavour is very linear as well, with some resinous hops, caramel malts, and metallic notes. Not complex at all, especially for a barley wine. Really boring and undrinkable after a while. This one is a big miss.

Draft - Roast malts, dark roast coffee and bitter chocolate. Jet black with a brown head. Big roasty, all the usual suspects with some liquorice. Oily and rich, a really nice stout.

Deep pitch black body with a thin, fast-dying oily light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, anise, pit fruits, licorice and some light spices with coffee and cream tucked away - very nice. Full-bodied; Deep rich roasted malt flavour with a ton of anise and even more alcohol and assertive coffee bitterness - pungent and long-lasting. Aftertaste shows a pungent licorice, anise and deep coffee, alcohol and metallic bitterness - super strong flavours and nothing mild about this at all. Overall, a nice and very pungent beer with a ton of flavours and some sweetness, but a bit too bitter - try aging it for a few years and perhaps the flavours will mellow out some. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington (State) on 10-February-2013 for US$9.99 sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 28-November-2013 - but needs even more than ~10 months aging, for sure.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours lightly cloudy golden amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a lacing cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, clove, pepper, candi sugar, honey, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of fruity yeast ester and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big peach, pear, apricot, pineapple, clove, pepper, candi sugar, honey, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, clove, pepper, honey, candi sugar, bread, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and malt flavors; with a great malt/fruity ester balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick and fairly smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice tripel style. All around nice complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Black colour, red hue, slight tan head. Aroma of liquorice, drop, dark cacao and soy sauce. Liquorice flavour, light sour note, roasted malt and red fruits. Very fizzy. Finish malts, caramel, red fruits and coffee notes. Bit too much CO2 coming free, hides the flavour and aroma somewhat. Still, more than decent brew.
