Description
Established in 2006, with a 3 vessel 30 bbl brewery originally capable of making over 5,000 bbls (now upwards of 15,000 bbls) of beer each year, the new brewing company set about shaking up the craft brewing world with two distinct beer lines: the aggressive San Diego / West Coast styles under the Port Brewing label, and a Belgian-inspired series carrying the “Lost Abbey” name.
Today Port Brewing continues at the vanguard of craft brewing, ranked as one of the top 10 new breweries in the nation by both industry experts and enthusiasts alike, driven in large part by its extraordinary Lost Abbey beers and a library of 1000+ plus oak bourbon, brandy, sherry, and wine barrels that comprise one of the most remarkable barrel-aging programs for a craft brewery of any size.

19.2 oz can, pours a cloudy dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma smells more like an American barley wine, with lots of resinous hops, caramel malt, and toffee. Flavour is bold, with a sturdy caramel malt base, lots of resinous hops, and some booze. Really great balance between caramel malt and resinous hops. Excellent.

Pours clear gold into a shaker. Foamy white head with good retention recedes leaving scant spiders. Earthy tangerine and lemon aromas. Medium bodied with sweet caramel and earthy pine upfront turning soft in the lasting sourdough, pith and earthy bark finish.

Pint can pours with a near clear deep gold colored body that has thin copper hues and supports a thin white head. The aroma offers up muddled somewhat fruity ester malts to go along with an inviting pine sap hoppiness and a sliver of biscuit maltiness. The taste delivers a pleasing degree of stinging pine hop sappy bitter depth thickened by by malts and a mild sense of esters. The bitterness grows to midway to meet the dry booziness to help keep the modest maltiness in check. Like the aroma this is a bit muddled and lacking the clean earnest punch of say... Stone's Ruined Again. Still a fun boozy pine sap sipper.

Small, disappearing yellowish cream head over deep ochre-red beer. Alcohol, fusels, dried fruit as raisins, figs, dates; refined syrup. Fruity, raisins, dried red grapes. Maltsyrup, if in the best way possible. Finish has a harsh woody bitterness. Very heavy, almost syrupy viscous. Alcoholheat, burning MF. OK, but I've had much better barleywines and certainly from this brewery! Can? Because! Thanks to Stef!

57 cl can (10,5%) @ FF tasting. Rated on 13.03.2021. Aroma is very mild with some caramel and tent after a night's sleep. Flavour has caramel, rather strong grapefruity hops and menthol. The hop profile is not a perfect match here - also the menthol vibes is a bit off. Like an average English strong. A big disappointment; Don't drink indeed. Rated on 2021-03-13.
