Description
Established in 2006, with a 3 vessel 30 bbl brewery originally capable of making over 5,000 bbls (now upwards of 15,000 bbls) of beer each year, the new brewing company set about shaking up the craft brewing world with two distinct beer lines: the aggressive San Diego / West Coast styles under the Port Brewing label, and a Belgian-inspired series carrying the “Lost Abbey” name.
Today Port Brewing continues at the vanguard of craft brewing, ranked as one of the top 10 new breweries in the nation by both industry experts and enthusiasts alike, driven in large part by its extraordinary Lost Abbey beers and a library of 1000+ plus oak bourbon, brandy, sherry, and wine barrels that comprise one of the most remarkable barrel-aging programs for a craft brewery of any size.

$5 draft at Shelter. Good value. Clear gold with a cap of white head. Nose has a little bit of grassy hop, more noble and peppery than new world. Corn and grist. Flavor is really just corn, grist and grass. Dry and peppery finish.

Mooch tasting, courtesy of the gang, bottle
Dark brown colour. Mild aroma of malt, caramel, earth. Dark sugars, with delicate fruity tones, acidity, and then wood and vanilla, finally some caramel; it hides the alcohol quite well; good and balanced, but without the malt richness expected from a self-proclaimed Barley Wine.

Bottle. Brownish black colour with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is toasted malts, coffee, roast, chocolate and some caramel sweetness to it. Flavour is quite much the same, but also has some mild alcohol to it.

Dark brown, with a thick head. The imperial stout seems to take dominance here, with a bit of roast, but then there's more sweet dark malt. Light fruitiness. On the palate, good balance because there's a bit of fruitiness, light chocolate, some complex sugars. Fairly bitter, you can tell it's from California. Woody finish. A touch of alcohol to lend balance. Pretty good.
