Description
Commonwealth Brewing Co was founded as the manifestation of one family’s love for making uncompromising, exceptional beer and sharing the experiences with friends. The spark of inspiration was ignited during a revelatory European brewery and beer hall tour while Jeramy was visiting Natalie, who was traveling (aka wandering) abroad for two years. But it wasn’t until 2013, after years of stove top excellence, beer geekery and a house too full of brewing equipment, that it was time to fully embrace the craft beer lifestyle.

Commonwealth opened Sept 6, 2015 as a result of next level commitment, mild insanity, family, friends and a profound sense of purpose. Since then, we’ve grown into a tight knit band of like minded people who believe beer should be adventurous, diverse, extremely drinkable, and defy boundaries. We honor farmhouse traditions, huge hop American styles, and the complex depths of wild fermentations.

Located inside a fully renovated, former fire and rescue station built in 1962 and nestled in a funky beach cottage community (flip flops mandatory) on the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia Beach, our facility is complete with a double garage bay tasting room, private event spaces, an outdoor beer garden, and a conditioned barrel cellar housing hundreds of barrels of mixed fermentations for long term aging.

Clear golden with a white head. Medium bodied. Classic spicy hop profile with a light, toasted malt presence. A good zesty bite in the finish. This is a helluva beer.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a clear amber color with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma was sweet malts, light floral citrus, grassy character too. Grassy, pils. Clean, crisp, with only a little bit of sweetness on the finish.

Pounder: Spicy barley malt nose, rye? Crystal clear amber, medium head, little retention. Rich and hearty malt, grass finish. Light body, soft carbonation. Great balance, full flavored. Excellent not overly hopped example of a pilsner. I'm not sure why this is classed as a Belgian ale.

Level 42 bottleshare. Thanks to Mr Tips for the can. Very hazy gold beer, good white head. Palate is light and smooth and has decent fine carbonation. Smooth light sweetish malts, light cream. Ripe orange and ripe mango. Modest pine. Light finish. Pretty tidy.

Pounder: Pine needle and charcoal nose. Mahogany, firm medium tan head, good lace. Pine, tar, licorice. Medium bidy, soft carbonation. A tad sweet but a very nice representation of the style.

Pounder: Tang drink nose. Opaque amber, medium head. Orange, grass underneath. Full body, easy carbonation. Tasty but kind of artificial. I like it anyway.

Some acidic orange and a little pine. Pours hazy golden with good head and lacing. Bitter finish. Not a ton to this one, and not nearly as good as some of the other Commonwealths like Kentucky... Tap at Churchkey.

16 oz nitro can poured into a tulip. Black with tan head. Aromas of whiskey, some banana, dark chocolate, cocoa, subtle coconut. Tastes of whiskey, some banana, dark chocolate, vanilla, roasty notes. Medium-full body with a dry finish. Very tasty.
