courtesy of ibrew2or3. 2008 bottle. Pours copper dark, no head. Aroma was overly hoppy with some malts and caramel. Taste, malty, sugary, boozy, light caramel notes and some resinous fruits. Some caramel coupled with a nice dark fruit mouthfeel.

Good smooth ropey beer aroma, attractive and appetizing. Looks somewhat like root beer. No visible carbonation. Head fades to a froth. On the palate there is decent carbonation. Has a bitter hop character that lingers for a while after each slug. Finish is hoppy leather or sumthin. Hangs for a while after the finish.

Bottle. Pours an orange with a head that quickly dies down to a thin film of foam. Aromas are an enticing mix of hops... pine and grapefruit are the top draws. A little too much malt in the flavor for my tastes... but the crisp hops are nice, just not quite dominant enough.

Location: Updating this rating with a draft sampling from the Brewpub, Harrisburg location, 6/13/10
Aroma: The nose is roasted malts, some coffee, and creamy coffee/mocha notes
Appearance: The pour is black, with some drops of lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste is on the dry side, with lots of malty notes to it
Palate: The body was on the smoothish side, medium-full, short finish
Overall Impression: This was certainly not as bad as my last rating would indicate, I wonder why I had such a poor impression the last time. It gets a pretty decent sized bump from me from a 2.6 to 3.3.
Sept 2008 Beer of the Month Club
Overall Impression: They sent me this and the wheat, and I've got to say the wheat was probably better. I like a good Stout, but this one was average at best, and probably below average, for its style, while the Wheat was pretty solid for its style. Maybe the issue is that the nose and look were better then the beer.

Sept 2008 Beer of the Month Club
Aroma: Citrusy and sweet
Appearance: Clear, yellowish thin head, cloudy
Overall Impression: This is a nice solid wheat beer, nothing overly special, but nice for it's style...

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark red-brown color with a large brown head. The aroma was tangy molasses, cherry and chocolate. The flavor was tangy and malty with notes of cherry and a strong dry chocolate presence that kept building and building. A bit of alcohol shows through. The mouthfeel was fairly thick. Way more chocolate than I am used to seeing in a barleywine. Delicious.

Smells good. Taste is strong. Seems higher in alky than 5%. Looks like clear ice tea. Filtered. Good, about average carbonation. Other fests I’ve had have more refined manners. $3.50 a bottle. Comparitivily, a little expensive around here. I’m being generous on the flavor rating.

Hoppy trails to you, Appallachian. Bitter, dull rather offensive pine needle flavor with lingering bitter grapefruit rind medicine. Nagging terrible soap. Aroma is same as flavor but more enjoyable and refreshing. Costly, $4 for a bottle, but nice label. On style, what else can be said? Borders on doppel IPA territory.
