Description
Proud Early Bird of Craft Beer - The Big Rock Story
17,000 years ago, a glacier carried a huge rock onto the Alberta prairies where none like it had been before. This "big rock" is the glacial erratic we take our name from, as no doubt, our founder's notion of creating a craft brewery in 1985 was a bit erratic at the time.
The rooster represents our early arrival as craft brewers. It's also a bit of a nod to the "cock of the walk" bravura that Ed McNally had when he started Big Rock Brewery.
We craft our beer with our brewmasters’ skill and imagination, utilizing local ingredients and innovative processes, all rooted in Ed McNally's original passion for excellence and in doing things differently and better.

Can from Big Rock in Vancouver
Cloudy pale blond colour. Mild aroma of stone fruit, light aroma of coconut. It's fairly dry, it has an infinitesimal flavour of peach, and not much else to say about malt and hop, but it's quite clean and refreshing, easy drinking.

Cloudy pale blond colour, small head. Decent aroma, gentle tropical fruit. The mouthfeel is bone dry and weak, barely any malt or cereal flavour to mention, it's correctly bitter at least, without much hop quality. For what it is, it's ok (and no flaws).

Cloudy dark blond colour. Light aroma of fruit and coriander. Undefined oats base, little hop quality, and strong chicory bitterness; like the others in the series, this one as well doesn't have exciting malt or hop components, but differently from the others it's flawed (the pithy bitterness).

Cloudy dark blond colour. Light aroma of sugar and stone fruit jam. Good body, sweetish, some malt, some resinous hops, balanced bitterness. Overall, semi-modern DIPA, but with some old school trait (the sweetness, the malt profile, the Cascade-like hop flavour). Not bad, my favourite of the pack.

On tap. Pours a clear red-copper with a thin, bubbly, short lived, off-white head that leaves spotty lacing. Faint aroma of caramel malt and that's it. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, light nuts and grassy hops in a dry, mild bitter finish. Light body with a watery texture and average carbonation. Easy drinking, but bland and boring.

355ml can. Pours a clear pale gold with a thin, foamy, short lived, white head that laces. Faint aroma of grainy pale malt and cornbread. Sweet flavour of grainy pale malt, corn, red apple and grassy hops in a dry, mild bitter finish. Light body with a thin, watery texture and average carbonation. This was obviously a cheap beer, so my expectations were met. You get what you pay for.

On tap at Big Rock Urban, pours black with a reddish tinge and a large, creamy beige head. Aroma is somewhat tart and briny, with earthiness, tart brine, and light oats. Flavour is unfortunately the same, with an unpleasant briny tartness, as well as earthy, bready malt. How do you release an oatmeal stout as weak, lame and off as this? Not good at all.

On tap at Big Rock Urban, pours a clear pale golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out faded coffee and cocoa, with little depth. Flavour is likewise pretty lame, with faded coffee and cocoa—not any depth at all. Very weak and uninspired.

Just another light lager but cleanly made with more flavor than the standards. Sk LB
