Black as pitch, thick looking, with a medium tan head. Strong roasted barley aroma, dry and burnt, unlike a bock, slightly creamy and nutty with cocoa and just a touch of dark fruit. Dry burnt malt flavor, creamy, chocolate, coffee, slight dark fruits, a touch of smoke or peat. Tastes more like an export stout. I would bet there is roasted barley in there. Quite nice, really, but there is little bock about it.

This was called New Years Fest but it seems to be the same. 2007 version. Medium to dark amber color, tall head. Rich malt aroma, slightly nutty, a bit sweet, also a bit buttery. Rich malt flavor. Nutty, bready, a bit sweet. Round and mellow, a bit too buttery, but with good hops as well, better than usual for the style. A little too much carbonation. Almost gassy. Strong, dry, amber malt and hop finish. Lingering bitterness. Very different to a Munich festbier.

Bottle, mail order from the brewery. Dark brown with a tall tan head and a touch of red. Slightly sweet malt aroma with chocolate and dried fruits. Dark malt flavor, slightly burnt, chocolate, not overly sweet at all, dry and mellow. Dryish, but a little too light. Not as rich as it should be. Decent, though, and nicely dry.

Bottle, mail order from the brewery. Deep golden color with a tall, fine head. Clear. Relatively rich, fragrant aroma of malt and hops; fruity, a bit buttery, very good hops. Hop-centered flavor. Malt is no slouch, but the hops are very good and the malt is simple and clean in the background. A bit fruity as well, with just a touch of citrus. Dry finish of malt and hops, not very bitter and very clean, though not β€œdry” and tasteless. Light, crisp beer with decent flavor and great balance. Very good overall, though not amazingly interesting. Aroma is better than taste.

Bottle, mail order from the brewery. Deep gold color with a tall head. Strong malty aroma, rather sweet, rich. Rich malt flavor, on the sweet side yet clean and relatively light. A touch of fruit, but mostly just rich malt. Very lightly hopped. Finish also is predominated by malt, with just enough hop to give it balance. Very clean and light for such a rich malt beer. Not wholly fascinating, but really well done and pleasant.

Deep golden color with a slight tinge of amber, and a tall foamy white head. Rich malt aroma, biscuity and grainy, with a decent hop character as well. Rather fragrant indeed somewhat sweet and very rich. Rich malt flavor, biscuits, cereals. Round and smooth. Hops are in the background but always evident. Medium or better bitterness. Moderate sweetness. A nice, rich lager in the Helles style, but with a much stronger hop characterβ€”I guess a Dortmunder Export type. Very interesting and pleasant. Good hop bitterness, and a great hoppy finish. Probably their best beer I have had so far.

Clear golden color. Thick white head. This brew showed excellent malty breadiness through out with some toasted malt. Very good example of the style.

@ GJBF 2007. Golden color. Tosted malts, some fruit, and hops. Flavor is just and extension of the mediocre aroma. It’s not a bad brew, but just sorta there.

@ GJBF 2007. Pours hazy gold. Alright aroma of fruits, earth, and yeast. Body is a bit thin. Flavor is earthy, some grass, light citrus. Pretty decent if the flavor was more intense.

@ GJBF 2007. Dark brown with a thick, tan head. Aroma is chocolate, sweet caramel malts, some milk. Flavor is similar, with plenty of tasty powdered chocolate, roasted malts, light smoke, and milk. I’d love to find a few bottles of this, this winter.
