Description
At Moon Dog we love crafting bloody delicious beers that are fun and a little bit different. We've been doing it since 2010 at our rad brewery in the backstreets of inner Melbourne’s Abbotsford. Over the years we’ve grown a heap, adding our tropical brewery bar paradise, the ballroom oasis function space, and a freakin' big fancy production brewery to keep more delicious beers flowing. We’re a proudly independent, Australian owned craft brewery, still run by the same guys that started it all those years ago.

Pours murky brown with a small head.Nose shows rich sweet syrupy malt with some soft oxidative notes, a little booze, gingerbread, spicy phenols and a red wine note. Lovely.Sweet flavours. Oxidative notes, brown sugar, woody notes, soft tannins and a strong port character. Some booze but it’s reasonable well integrated.Nice syrupy body and light carbonation.Great stuff.

Pours dark brown with a light tan head.Nose shows roasted malt, a soft smokey hit, sweet caramel and soft bready notes.Roasty flavours too but with a fair bit of sweetness from some bready malt. A faint smokey notes is present along with the faintest amount of chilli spice.Nice creamy mouthfeel, carbonation could be a little higher though.

Bottle. Golden amber with a white head. Grainy aroma with kumquat, pine, passionfruit, grass, caramel. Sweet with grain and caramel, spicy and rather crude bitterness. OK, but not what I looking for in a lager.

Pours black with a large, lasting head.Nose shows chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa and spicy noble hops.Interesting flavours with some sweet caramel alongside the restrained salt followed by soft chocolate malt leading to a drier roasty finish.Nice syrupy body, carbonation could be a little higher.

Pours dark copper with a small white head.Nose shows tart green apples, caramel, soft booze, french oak, toffee, lychee, passion fruit. Pretty awesome.Flavours don’t quite match up, some caramel, apple, cardboard-like grainy malt and booze. Finishes quite harsh with a fair bit of booze.Needs more carbonation, very low at the moment.

Amber with a small off-white head that lasts very well. Aroma is of toffee apples, mild funk, some alcohol. Medium bodied. Taste is sweet with a big Calvados finish that’s rumblingly warm. The beer gets a little overwhelmed here, but there’s toffee, a little funk and a fair bit of bitterness too. Too much like a beer cocktail for my tastes, but it’s fun and done well.

Bottle. Black with a tan head that rapidly retreats to the rim. Aroma of Cognac, molasses, heavily roasted coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, soy sauce and yes truffles if you squint a bit. Oily. Grapey, dark berries, bitter finish with some oranges and spices (including salt). In between there is a stout that’s got lots of dark sugars and quite intense roasted malt and coffee. It doesn’t quite get elbowed aside but shares the limelight a bit too much with the spirit for my liking. Couldn’t pick the truffles at all once I’d started drinking it. Alcohol is not all that obvious which is surprising given the prominence of the Cognac and its strength. Avoids so many things that might have made it awful but never quite grabbed me.

330ml bottle @ Leijuva Lahna, Helsinki

Bottled 01 JUL 2013 - Pours pitch black with a smooth light brown head. Strong and heavy aroma with notes of smoke, rum, booze, wood, leather, hints of tartness and berries. Taste is a bit untypical and layered with notes of smoke, wood and berries, roasted malts, some leather, rum and booze. Finish is smooth, warming and a bit sticky with notes of alcohol, rum, leathery smoked wood and oak. Quite complex, but a bit unbalanced.
