Pours black with a large, dark tan head.Nose shows loads of roasted malt with honey showing underneath. Coffee and smoky notes are noticeable, and later some very soft cocoa.Heavy roasted malt as a flavour too, before the lactose rolls through providing a fair bit of sweetness. Seems a bit disjointed, with the sudden change from bitter, harsh roasted malt to honey sweetness.Carbonation is a bit excessive.Nice but by the time I’d finished the glass it was getting pretty cloying.

Pours black with a large, lasting tan head.Nose shows smoke, whisky, a faint sour/funky notes and heavy peat. Too much reliance on the peat.Very similar flavours, again with lots of peat and smoke. Other than that there’s some soft roasted malt but not very expressive.Carbonation seems a bit full on.Could have worked really well, unfortunately the peat tramples over everything else, preventing the whisky and roasted malt complexities from showing.

Bottle. Opaque black with a tan head. Aroma of mocha, honey, pepper, vanilla. Some musty overripe dark berries too that jar a little with my expectations of a stout. Very silky texture, even though carbonation is low it’s a surprise. Sweet with chocolate, honey and vanilla. Sweetness lingers and the bitterness chugs along but never really emerges. But there’s a peppery burst at the end which helps clean up in lieu. Didn’t quite cohere for me.

Bottle, 12C. Cloudy amber with a large stable white head that lasts all the way. Aroma of toffee, peat, dark berries, fruity peppers. Luscious mouthfeel with restrained carbonation. No overt alcohol although it feels all of its 9%. Rich and sweet with layers of smoky toffee and butterscotch, dark berries, plummy chiles (not listed as ingredients on the bottle, but surely there are some). Bitterness struggles out towards the end, along with gentle chile heat.

Bottle, 13C. Pours oily black with a cm of tan head that lasts pretty well. Creeping aroma of treacle, whisky, vanilla, tar. Taste has whisky straight away with stout and peat flavours underneath. Oily mouthfeel, lowish carbonation. The whisky goes nicely and is not overwhelming but is not very integrated into the other flavours. Taste has burnt dark toffee, tar, licorice, coffee, some pepper and red berries. Bitterness builds up along with spices in a somewhat acrid finish with some whisky heat. More spirit and less wood than the bourbon version, but the big difference is really that this has bottled much better. [3.7]Large head fades to a fat coat and laces well. Carbonation is higher. Whisky flavours seem better integrated but the peaty influence is coming on stronger. Slight tanginess. Touch of soy sauce there too. Plenty going on without being really overbearing.

From a 330ml bottle on 18/7/2012. Pours a cloudy cola colour with a small head. Has a strange spicy, slightly medicinal smell, featuring ginger and yeast. The flavour is sweet with some chocolate, cola, fruitcake and berries, with a slightly sour citrus tang at the end. This is a bit of a weird beer which, though quite interesting, doesn’t quite come together for me.

Pours very dark brown with a creamy off-white head.Nose shows spicy phenols, overt citrus notes, gooseberries, pepper, doughy wheat and an almost Brett-like funky note. Later on peated malt becomes quite noticeable. Pretty wierd. Like a spicy lemonade and lime drink with brett and peated malt added.Flavours are even more interesting. Burning leaves, faint smoked hame, spicy rye, prominent peated malt, and again, a faint citrus-like acidic note. After a few sips the peat seems to dominate, overriding everything else.Carbonation is excessive. Nice warming alcohol though.

clear brown, small beige head. aroma is malty, spicy, bitter yeasty. flavor is bitter malty, licorice, wood, bitter yeast, like a belgian stout, peppery.
