Description
To say we're 'born to brew' may seem like a bold statement, but after dedicating over 150 years to the art of brewing, we believe it's true.

Coopers is a brewing family. Its in our blood. For six generations we've been custodians of a proud legacy that began in 1862 when Thomas Cooper brewed his first batch of ale. Our passion for brewing has kept us together and helped us through economic recessions, wars, government imposts, changing tastes, and the occasional hostile takeover bid.

Today, our unique brand of naturally conditioned ales and stouts are enjoyed around the world and we're still making these beers using the same traditional brewing methods that Thomas did. And when we say hand-made by the Cooper family', we mean it. If you visit the Brewery you'll probably bump into a Cooper who works there. While other breweries might make all sorts of claims about their 'origins' the fact is that we are Australia's oldest family owned and run brewery, and that's not changing anytime soon.

Very fruity and full-bodied, but the yeast at the bottom of the bottle tasted really, really bad.

It seems to get quite high ratings but I found it too watery, some fruitiness though.

Dark black. Roasty aroma with a hint of menthol(!) and licorice. Medium to full bodied, rather sweet and only mildly bitter finish.

2000 vintage: Dark amber with big, airy head. Fruity, malty and full bodied. Sweet and buttery. Rather low bitterness. A complex, subtle, rich ale.

Bottled:
Black with a firm, brown head. Well roasted -almost smoked- aroma with notes of coffee and sweet liquorice. Flavour is somewhat sourish, well roasted coffee with a long bitter/harsh finish. Somewhat thin mouth feel.

Re-Sample (08/01/01): Cloudy amber, no head; banana bread nose; crips maltiness, fruity touch of acidity, very refreshing in the finish. The yeast lends it an almost Belgian character (like an unspiced saison, perhaps?). My first few bottles of this did nothing for me, but I guess maybe it wasn't enough. Take the thermometer up to 35C and this really gets good.

Muddy brown. Tarry, fruity aroma is moderated by strong sweetness. The palate is relatively full, with lots of fruitiness. The sweetness is not particularly refined, but does evidence some light molassesy notes. OK example.

Well, I have to revisit this one and tame the numbers down a bit. I still think its a nice beer but not the world class stout I previously was rating it as. Nice opaque appearance though, with chunky yeast. Tan head, medium size, OK lacing. Aroma is slightly roasty with a little milk chocolate and a tinge of olive. flavor has a nice roastiness coupled with moderate sweetness. Light milk chocolate. A hint of sourness, perhaps a plasticky acrid type flavor. Moderately full mouthfeel. Natural carbonation gives fine bubbles and smooth finish. Not much hop presence, but accceptable for a sweet stout.
