Kristallweizen in the Kapuziner brand, from tap at a restaurant in the Oberpfalz. Snow white, thick and frothy, closed but gradually thinning, stable head, clear orangey blonde robe with pale amberish tinge and lively strings of sparkling. Aroma of banana bread, clove, sandwiches, touch white pepper, rainwater, grass, dried flowers, minerals, paper glue. Clean, rounded onset, sweetish with slight sourish undertone, medium carbonation; slick body, cereally and white-bready with rainwatery and glueish side notes, floral hops in the finish with very mild but importantly balancing bitterishness. A clean banana-like flavour lingers along with something peachy. The removal of the yeast typically takes away some of the finesse and character but this obviously goes for all Kristallweizens and this one is an enjoyable and balanced example.

Bavarian Helles by trusted Kulmbacher, bottle from a shop in Frankfurt. Snow white, moussey, medium thick, breaking head on a clear pale yellow-golden robe. Aroma of dried white bread, wet flour, chamomile, ferrous spring water, oxidized green apple slices, vague green banana and a whiff of 'putteke', as we say in Flemish. Sweetish onset with vaguely sourish undertone, hints of old apple and pear, mild minerally carbonation; smooth pale cereally maltiness, white-bready, even slightly brioche-like in its sweetishness, in the end very gently bittered by floral and grassy hops, adding subtle aromas of sweetclover, chamomile and meadowsweet. As is to be expected from the style, the finishing bitterness is very soft so that the emphasis remains on the sweetishness of the malts. Decent and quite refined, solid example of a Helles.

Bottle. Clear pink/red with no head. Aroma of blood oranges and minerals. Taste of blood oranges, grapefruits and some grains. Pretty sweet and slightly sour. No bitterness. Medium carbonation. One-dimensional and altogether too artificial. If you want blood (oranges) you’ve got it but I’d rather go for a Jever Fun Blutorange anytime.

Barwa złota, klarowne, piana biała, średnio obfita, średnio trwała. W aromacie słodowe, nuty zbożowe w typie pilzneńskim. W smaku dość wytrawne, lekka słodowość, ogólnie czysty, lagerowy profil. Goryczka średniowysoka, wysycenie i ciało w normie, dobra pijalność, piwo jest rześkie. Bardzo dobry pils.

500ml bottle. Cloudy, pink-ish golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Slightly artificial, lemonade aroma, hints of grapefruit, blood orange, some citric acid, artificial sweetener. Taste is sugary sweet, citrusy fruity, hints of orange, blood orange, grapefruit, some citric acid, slightly biscuity, malty basis. Watery texture, smooth and soft palate, fine, dense, mildly prickly carbonation. Relatively sweet, not many traces of beer, but not too artificial neither; fairly refreshing - quite OK.
