Bottle from Yamaoka. Never would have tried this, after the horrible beers, but I heard it was much better. Let us see. Spicy apple nose, baked, butter. Deep golden, light bubbles, lace, clear. Sweet apple flavor, rich, creamy, nice apple, somewhat in the Norman sense. Full, somewhat oily body. Quite nicer than expected.

Thank you Davido! Pours yellow, sparkling wine carbonation. Nose is sweet-sour. Some salty vinegar but mainly sweetness. Taste has nice sweet apple juice, some vinegar acidity on the side but not really much. Pretty quaffable, a bit too sweet for me but still pretty good.

Random Japanese beer of the day: Kaibutsu Shima Kuro Beer from Tsurumi Shuzo in Aichi. I stumbled upon this beer at 山岡酒店 Yamaoka-Saketen. I liked the look, deep black with a reddish-brown head which alas had zilch staying power. The nose is sweet sugary molasses, soy and chocolate but mostly treacle. Light watery bodied and seltzer like effervescence makes for an unpleasant mouthfeel. The taste is soda like, chocolate, molasses and what seems like weird artificial flavorings. way too sweet. This seems more like a crappy discount soda than a beer.

Bottle mail ordered from the brewery. Black with a tall, airy head that quickly disappeared. Strange nose of caramel, chocolate, light coffee, soy sauce and a bit of licorice. All over the place, and not in a good way. Sweet and cloying, caramel, light chocolate and coffee with tons of cream and sugar, spice. Lightly roasted. Very bad stuff. This is like a beer made in 1994 by a Japanese brewery who has no clue what beer is. Doesn’t really fit into any style category, but I’ll say stout. Worse than the other.

Bottle, mail ordered from the brewery. Fruity, slightly estery nose. Orange, caramel, toffee, light spice, some grain harshness and a bit burnt, like burnt caramel. Medium to dark brown with orange and very cloudy. Low, fine head. Sweet, fruity caramel, toffee, caramel apples. Cloying and unprofessional, yeasty. Fine, light carbonation works fine. Amateurish and home-brew like. No real hop character. I’ll label it a brown ale, because that’s about the closest thing it comes to. Malt-centered, badly fermented.
