Pitch black color. Sports an intense nose of dark chocolate, truffles with just a hint of oranges. Upfront fruitness leading to a big roasted malty backbone with notes of plums, raisins and dark chocolate. Very well balanced. Big bitter finish with lingering dark chocolate flavors. An outstanding example of the style, with the orange flavors that meld well and gives it a bit more depth. Excellent.

12 oz bottle courtesy of hogfodder, who brought this back from Japan and shared it with after4ever and I on 3/20/08. Pour is orange golden, clear with little or no head. Aroma is very soft floral hops, rose hips and some rounded caramel maltiness. Taste is a nice balance, of the malt and hop with some nice resin - graininess through the finish. Aroma the highlight of this one. Thanks for sharing Rick!

Deep brown with a nicely contrasting light tan head. Roasted malts, chcocolate, caramel, and milk. Smooth, almost creamy body. Flavor is a little too roasted, but good. Roasted malts, chcocolate, molasses, dark fruits, and a little spice. Finish is roasted. This isn’t the best porter, but there isn’t anything wrong with it. Easy to drink.

Been meaning to pick this up for a while now. Pour is lightly hazy straw with plenty of noticeable carbonation. Has a real small head. Aroma is sour fruit, orange, a bit of sweet malts, yeast, and lime. Interesting. Body is full of carbonation and a touch watery. Interesting beer. Acidic touch on the tougue comes from noticeable lime. Also tastes of spice, sour fruit, sweet malts, and some yeast. I don’t know if I’m even allowed to form on opinion since I don’t know what constitutes a Japanese Saison. But it is an interesting beer...pretty fun to drink.

Hazy orange with an off-white head. Citrus and earthy hops are subtle but noticeable. Caramel, malt and some floral notes as well. Nice body for an IIPA. Citric hops, some floral, caramel, and bready malts in the flavor. Finish has a nice lingering bitterness. Not a huge IIPA, but a pretty decent beer.

Clear orange with nearly no head. Hoppy aroma, earth, pine, some citrus, along with some sweet malt. Flavor is very earth, grass oriented. Some pine, caramel malts. The earth/grass is overpowering. Smooth, full bodied. If the grass was toned down I would have enjoyed this more, as it is it’s a decent pale ale.

Medium offwhite head. Hazy orange body. Deep firm caramelly malty aroma with notes of straw and hops. Dry medicinal straw and hops malt taste with light mango hop notes. Caramelly. Dry medicinal aftertaste. Very nice! Definitely US-inspired. (0.33l bottle from the bus station in Matsumoto.)

Not to be confused with their DPA (Draft Pale Ale, which surprisingly is only avialable on draft). Light amber color, pineapples, citrusy hoppy nose. Med hoppy citrusy mouth with some noticable noble hops as well. Mildly bitter finish.

Pours a copper color with a smallish light tan head. Aroma is fresh fruit, citrus hops(orange mainly), and sweet malts. Hops? In a Japanese IPA? Finally! They’re not as powerful as you’d get in an American IPA, but up to this point I’ve been sorely dissapointed with the sweetness of Japan’s IPAs. This has a nice hop biterness to it right from the start. Sweet, citrus fruits flow into floral and malt. Finshes with a decent dry hop bite. Could still use more hops, but this is a step in the right direction.
