Description
Twin Sails Brewing joined Port Moody’s “Brewers Row” late in 2015, opening right next door to Yellow Dog. The name of the brewery refers to its founders, identical twin brothers, as well as the common sight of sailboats that can be seen on the waters of the Burrard Inlet right out front of the brewery. Twin Sails focuses on progressive American IPAs and stouts and have recently implemented a wild barrel program. They are always trying to push the boundaries of what can be done with beer in BC. Quality comes first and foremost, but in the end, it’s just a bunch of guys and girls having way too much fun brewing beer.

Very rich coffee, medium body for style. Not getting much caramel which is probably a good thing.

Can from the Gull. Medium brown. Not much head. Husky sort of aroma, light chocolate and stale coffee grounds. On the palate, it's thin, off-dry. The roasty notes are a bit better on the palate than they are on the nose - cleaner coffee, and more rounded chocolate. Not really getting that hazelnut. These sorts of stouts - dry but not bitter - just come across burnt and thin to me. Not my thing.

Re-rate: Poured from 355mL can. Dark brown with quickly dissipating beige head. Still somewhat similar rating as before, but there is a green pepper note starting to sneak in. Coffee isn't holding up with time. Better to drink the rest of the cans sooner rather than later. Dec 10, 2022 (8/4/8/4/15=3.9): Poured from 355mL can. Black with dissipating beige head. Coffee, sweet vanilla-like creaminess, chocolate, some barrel booze. Decent, but a little bit lacking in overall well roundedness.

Poured from 473mL can. Murky yellow with white head. Aroma has a ton of stone fruit, taste is pith and super muted hops (almost to the point where I ask, what happened to the hops?). Dull and muted. Disappointment.

Poured from the tap. Near black with small beige head. Lactose, vanilla, subtle spice and rum. Decent job and hitting the rum and eggnog quality. Lighter medium bodied, don’t see this being one to keep for trades.

473mL can, pours black with a medium light brown head. Nose is full of marshmallow, lactose and liquid milk chocolate. Flavour is sweet and chocolatey, with lactose, dusty cocoa, and liquid milk chocolate. Chocolatey and dessert-like without being too cloying. Not a complex beer but it's pretty tasty.

473mL can, pours an opaque murky golden yellow with a medium white head. Aroma brings out pithy stone fruits, lots of chalk, and citrus hops. Flavour is murky and chalky, with lots of stone fruit pith, almost no hops (25 IBU for a IIPA? Fuck off), and some chalk. Rather green, pithy and murky. This is quite low-quality.

16 oz. can, pours an opaque dull yellow with a medium white head. Aroma is fairly dank, with citrus hops, some dankness, chalk, and some stone fruits. Flavour is all jumbled and earthy, with earthy hops, light dankness, chalk, and earthiness. Jumbled, earthy and somewhat chalky, with a poor hop expression. Pretty lame.
