Dark nutty brown. Aroma is very toasty from both the malts and that "organic hop" note that I also find quite toasty. Along with this are undercurrents of chocolate and nuts. Nice lasting thin head. Body is thin. The flavour sticks close to that heavyhanded toastiness with nuts, cocoa and a bit of earthiness. The finish is dry, and it’s a fair bit hoppier than I’d expect in a beer of this type. They add gypsum, which brings out that "pale ale"-ish bitterness. Has some good elements but leaves me wanting for some residual sugars to balance it out.

Almost black colour with a natural, rough-hewn head. Chocolatey, lightly coffeeish aroma jumps out of the glass with hints of vanilla sugar and almonds. Body is moderate with light chocolate and cocoa notes. Finishes too watery, though. A beer that starts off fairly strong with appearance and aroma, then tails off as you drink it until the finish leaves you wishing you had a St. Ambroise on deck.
