12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear, yellow color, with a big, foamy, white head. The aroma is orange pith, hay, corn husks, and water crackers. Dry and musty, with a mellow, acrid bitterness. Light, thin, and astringent. Weak and poor.

355ml bottle. Cloudy, dark yellow-ish, brass colour with small to average, super dense, creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Sweet-ish, wheaty malty and zesty, citrusy fruity, minimally spicy aroma, hints of orange peel, a touch of coriander. Taste is sweet-ish, wheaty malty, slightly yeasty fruity, minimally citrusy fruity and barely spicy, diluted hints of pear, orange peel, almost undetectable vestiges of coriander. Watery texture, smooth and soft palate, fine, super dense, creamy carbonation. Well working (but in this case useless or counter-productive) nitro effect, rather watery, barely spicy - OK. Would prefer a non-nitro version with a tad more coriander.

pours big and black with no head. Nose is cinnamon forward. First taste is spicy, like peppers but not too hot, just a little warmth. More like a pastry stout than a milk stout. A little boozy near the end. Decent co2 throughout.

12 ounce can. Bright amber orange pour. Large rocky beige head live festive lacing. Mild toasted malt aroma. Flavor is sweet caramel malt and spicy hops. Remarkably smooth and quite flavorful. Great balance. Disappointed by the low overall ratings for this, as I have found this to be one of the better Marzens I have tasted this year.

Notes from January 2011 $10.50 six pack from New Beer. Bottled on 11/29/10. Can't remember the last time I bought a six pack of a brew I never tried before. Another customer was grabbing a few & mentioned it being a smoked Baltic porter & I was immediately sold. Two of my top three favorite styles, by your powers combined... :) Now while it didn't end up being the Holy Grail, it did end up being pretty tasty. Took three bottles to really get a hold of it. Ended up enjoying it most when it was very cool, but not yet cold. (About the temperature it was a couple hours after taking it out of my shopping bag). Charred black body. Bulbous, thin, dark tan head. Minimal lace. Smell is hearty blackened malt, sharp with burnt bbq sauce & raisins. Coffee. Fumy alcohol & a bit of baking chocolate. Taste is burnt bread, cocoa mix, woody soot, & a just a bit of caramel. Smoke comes through as meaty, if a bit too charred. Not bacon-y, but at least it's not barky/acrid like some lesser smoked beers. It's just lacking that one extra note to give it a 5.0. Finish lingers with leafy/earthy hops. Feel is excellent. Creamy, but decently carbonated. A touch hot, but not difficult. Soothing.

Bottle drunk on Halloween after trick or treat and putting an overly wound up, tired kid to sleep. Dark black, small tan head. Sweet syrupy roasted nose, black molasses and nearly burnt grain. Mouthfeel is huge, hint of soy, big bitterness balancing the sweetness pretty well. Flavor is big and bold, moderate complexity. Nice impy!

Im Glas tiefschwarz und lichtundurchdringlich. Die hellbraune, feinporige Schaumkrone wirkt cremig bis wässerig-flaumig und gut haltbar. Die Duftaromatik strotzt nur so von Erdnuss bzw. Erdnussbutter und Schokolade. Der Antrunk kommt feinspritzig, schokoladig süß, röstig herb und hat selbstverständlich einiges an Erdnussbutternoten dabei. Im Mund zeigt sich ein voller, weicher, cremiger Körper mit sehr feiner Rezenz und deutlicher Süße. Geschmacklich und aromatisch zeigen sich die Erdnussbutter und die Schokoladennote sehr dominant. Die leicht röstige Herbe, die sich bemerkbar macht, kommt gegen die kräftige Süße und die außerordentliche Aromatik kaum an. So entsteht ein Gesamtbild, welches etwas schwerfällig wirkt und den ungeübten Biertrinker oder ungeübten Stouttrinker wahrscheinlich etwas abschreckt. Der geübtere Bierfreak wird aber durchaus seinen Gefallen an diesem Bier finden, sofern er sich auf die Kombination mit Erdnussbutter einlässt und diese auch mag. Im Nachtrunk wirken die Noten von Erdnusbutter und Schokolade scheinbar ewig nach. Fazit: Ich für meinen Teil habe vor einiger Zeit gelernt, dass sich so ein Bier für eine Tasting-Reihe mit mehreren Personen nicht eignet. Als Solobier oder als Pairing-Partner zu Vanille-Desserts, Vanille-Eis oder eventuell sogar Banane oder gegrillter Banane kann es aber einen absoluten Wow-Effekt erzeugen.
