The non-Swedish version is another fine example of Czech lager, only this time a dark beer. Just full of flavour.

500ml bottle, best before November 2007, drank in June 2007. I chose this beer (from my stash) because I had some Chilli Edam cheese my wife had bought for my Belgian beer night and I wouldn’t let her serve it because it would have ruined the tastebuds of everyone. I wanted to eat the cheese with a beer that would complement each other. My review is for the beer before I started eating the chilli cheese, although I enjoyed it more washing down the biscuits and cheese. Poured into my Gordon’s Finest Gold thistle glass, it looks great. Dark with an off white head. The aroma is of sweet malts, the taste is weak and thin, so too the mouthfeel. I thought this might be disappointing, I wasn’t mistaken, it will help wash down the chilli cheese.

On tap at Sladovna, Bratislava. Golden coloured, small airy white head, mild grainy nose. Malty, grainy and a way too watery with short bitter hoppy finish.

Can, 3.8%. Dark brown with big beige head. Aroma is malt, caramel, light roasted malts and a little hop. Flavour is malt, chocolate, little sweet, little roasted malts, caramel, little bitter and a little nutty.

Oct 2009: Brown 500ml bottle, poured into a ’Veltins’ branded stemmed 0.2 litre tulip shaped glass. My favourite lager/pilsner glass was filled three times by this beer and on each pour it looked and sounded lively. Mid-range light golden pilsner colour, thin white which left a weak collar on each pour and very quickly too. The head let it down badly in my opinion. Very little aroma to report on, hay, grass and not a lot of anything really, gets my regular 3 for a non-smelling lager/pilsner. Tangy feel, but no body or flavours to rise it above plenty of other ’run of the mill’ pilsners available anywhere and everywhere around the world. Seemed better on tap in Prague. In my dining room it was just another beer for me to review and try as I did, no redeeming features came to its rescue, this is a bog standard pilsner!

draught at Haštalský Dědek Prague. Hazy golden colour, large whitehead. Yeasty aroma mixed with malt. Medium-bodied, solid malty base with a nice yeasty touch, slightly fruity. Aromatic hoppy finish. A good session beer, much better than the regular Mušketýr.
