500 ml can from Sam’s, Downers Grove. Best before 20 Mar 09. A Baltic beer in a can. Will this come out better, being protected from the hazards faced by the green bottle in the picture? Well, first off, it has an ingredient list, and right after "barley malt" is "corn groats." Hmmm… groats! In a straight lager glass, it pours a somewhat gold color, sudsy white head. Smell is unmistakably malt with fusels from fermented corn. Taste is definitely corny, into my usual description: Karo syrup. The light kind. Very grainy, and gives the impression of having been spiked with cheap vodka. Something still compels me to drink it, maybe the need to get a snootful so I can go to sleep.

2 L plastic bottle. Pours slight hazy yellow and with a fully diminished white head. Butterish aroma, slight grainy. Grainy dry flavour with a finish of butter. Too much diacetyl for my liking.

Hazy blond color. Common Lager, sweetish, with some hay/honeish character and respectable bitterness.

(Plastic bottle 200 cl) Actually comes as "Gubernija Zhigulevskoe Svetloe Pivo" in cyrillic letters - I reckon it’s this one (although I absolutely don’t understand the high US ratings!). Anyways, this pours slightly hazy golden with a tiny, unclean head. Odd aroma of vegetables, but not completely unpleasant. Medium body, a little flat in the mouthfeel - like most plasticbottled beers. Sweet accents of brewing cereal, a little cardboard and then a rough bitterness. Truly a relic from an ancient Soviet era. 301107

Bottle. The label says "Weissbier" under the beer’s name. Hazy pale yellow color with a big white head. Aroma of malt, notes of hops and faint hints of wheat. Flavor has some sweetish malt and some sourish citric wheat. Light-bodied. More pale-lager-ish than a hefeweizen but has a bit of wheat beer character. not good, but drinkable. (Note: the importer’s hebrew back label says this beer contains 1.9% ABV, but the label has a lot of typing errors so I don’t really trust it.)

500ml bottle at Chris Shindig. Gold, lasting white head. Really bad candy sugar, sweetness. Some kind of kiddie sweet, very corny, awful.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with no head. The aroma is sweet and dominated by malt, while the flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel. And it has a good body.
