FoBAB 2007, Chicago. Cuppa cuppa cuppa cup-caffiene zombie! Too, too bitter from coffee, in my humble opinion. Oatmeal smell should have smoothed it, but it’s just too coffee bitter. Looked great in the glass, even had a nice coffee smell. Just came in too bitter. But I’m sore more people will come in loving it.

FoBAB 2007, Chicago. Overall winner of this year’s fest, too. Definite raspberry in the nose, followed by stout and bourbon. Taste is indeed a perfect balance of raspberry and Imperial Stout. No alcohol hotness, just a beautiful warm feel, even from the souvenir 4 oz. sampler. Finish comes in just a little thicker.

GABF 2007. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of berries - raspberries and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of raspberries, roasted malt, wood, chocolate, and bourbon. Just lovely.

Had this twice (so far), a handbottled version generously shared by MadsBerg and at GABF 2007. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of roasted malt as well as medium notes of brown sugar, wood, and bourbon. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt, bourbon, and soy sauce, leading to a dry bourbon finish. The alcohol leaves a slight burn on the palate.

Draft sampler. Gold color. At the end of a sampler flight, there’s no head remaining. Aroma is not easy to discern in a smoky bar, but nice malts and fruits there. Cranberry is there, all right, but unlike many fruit beers, the fruit does not overwhlem the beer because its matched by the fruity tartness of the saison style. Something’s not quite together in my own palate, but it can be very likable.

Draft sampler. A brown foam clings to the side of the glass over a not-quite solid black beer. Dark, bitter coffee notes smoothed by velvety oatmeal, wihich lets some of American hop load come through. Finish offers an unexpected note of sweet apple.

Sampler at RB Chicago. three years of ratings for the Barrel-Aged Coffee Porter and this is the first we’ve found of the base beer. This probably means Pete has a barrel with him at GABF or maybe for FoBAB. This has a syrupy, Kahlúa smell. Thin brown foam on top makes it look just like an espresso shot. Sharp bite of strong coffee; no offsetting sweetness here. Still manages to leave room for some English hop bitterness. Even so, it drains very smoothly with no apologies, no regrets.

(Hand bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of madsberg. Pours completely opaque black with a tiny, light brown head. Aroma is of burned malt. Quite a full body rich with burned malts - but hey, what happened to the bourbon? Malt astringent finish. 270607

ABR 2006. Lightly spiced. Coriander and wheat. Heavily carbonated. This did a good job with this one, but the beer could use a little more body. Cloudy but it does look filtered.

On tap at RB, Nov. 12, 2005, called "Bourbon Barrel-aged Coffee Oatmeal Stout". Deep black coffee black with no head. Light vanilla and cold coffee beans, soy sauce, and more coffee. In mouth, pungeant roasted coffee with sweet chocolate malt, cherries, and light hops. Rich and pleasant.
