Description
Griffin Claw Brewing Company’s official opening day may be July 18th, 2013 but it all started when Dan Rogers began working his magic at Big Rock Chophouse in Birmingham, MI. Dan had been brewing since 1991 and eventually found his way to Big Rock in 2004, this is the unofficial start of Griffin Claw. Dan continued hammering out amazing beers in the small confines of Big Rock and the Michigan beer community started taking notice. It wasn’t until 2010 that his name and beers received a lot more attention. 2010 was a big year, winning two World Beer Cup medals for Norm’s Raggedy Ass and Bonnie’s Raggedy Ass.

Griffin Claw’s culture is that of growth. Our path to get where we are has been a quick one but it’s because of our people. We are centered around young, hungry, active beer enthusiasts – with a foundation of grizzled vets. Our love for this Great Beer State is increased as the days go on and we love the industry that we’re in.

473ml can [12.0% abv]. Jet black colour with average, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, dark beige head. Sweet-ish fruity and chocolately, dark malty aroma, minimally artificial notes of raspberry with a sherbet touch, notes of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, hints of Bourbon, vanilla, toffee. Taste is sweet, fruity and roasty, chocolately, dark malty, slightly alcoholic, notes of raspberry, milk chocolate, caramel, Bourbon, toffee, some vanilla. Relatively watery, minimally crumbly texture, fine but slightly fizzy carbonation, lingering and slightly warming, boozy finish.

On tap at Griffin Claw, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma is very boozy, with lots of brandy barrels, toasted bready malt, and some caramel. Flavour is full of brandy barrels, followed by caramel and toasted bread. Dominated by the barrels. Fun stuff, but the Mrzen character is indiscernible.

5.6/10 Appearance 6 Aroma 6 Flavor 6 Texture 4 Overall 5.5
On tap at Griffin Claw, pours a hazy amber red with a small pink-tinged white head. Aroma brings out the tart raspberries and lacto upfront, with a touch of blueberry maybe. Flavour is more blueberry, with lots of acidity, tart raspberry and lacto. A little harsh and lacking cohesion. Fun one, but it's pretty haphazardly brewed.

On tap at Griffin Claw, pours jet black with a small dark brown head. Aroma brings out chocolate, caramel and some earthy coffee. Flavour is robust, with lots of earthy cocoa, some coffee, and a bit of fruity tartness that I'm not sure is intentional. Still, quite complex and a nice interplay of different elements. Very good.

6.8/10 Appearance 6 Aroma 7 Flavor 7 Texture 6 Overall 7
On tap at Griffin Claw, pours a clear copper brown with a small off-white head. Aroma reveals plenty of the bourbon barrels upfront, accentuated by the espresso beans, and toasted malt. Flavour is a bit harsh upfront, with what seem like low-quality bourbon barrels, followed by espresso, booze, and toasted malt. The interplay of flavours works pretty well, even given the aforementioned shortcomings. Good stuff.
