Description
Griffin Claw Brewing Company’s official opening day may be July 18th, 2013 but it all started when Dan Rogers began working his magic at Big Rock Chophouse in Birmingham, MI. Dan had been brewing since 1991 and eventually found his way to Big Rock in 2004, this is the unofficial start of Griffin Claw. Dan continued hammering out amazing beers in the small confines of Big Rock and the Michigan beer community started taking notice. It wasn’t until 2010 that his name and beers received a lot more attention. 2010 was a big year, winning two World Beer Cup medals for Norm’s Raggedy Ass and Bonnie’s Raggedy Ass.

Griffin Claw’s culture is that of growth. Our path to get where we are has been a quick one but it’s because of our people. We are centered around young, hungry, active beer enthusiasts – with a foundation of grizzled vets. Our love for this Great Beer State is increased as the days go on and we love the industry that we’re in.

16 ounce can into dimpled mug, canned on 7/30/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of cracker, white bread dough, and lightly toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of honey, nuttiness, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. A touch of fruity/yeasty aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balanced of bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, white bread dough, and lightly toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of honey, nuttiness, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light honey/nuttiness, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, with minimal fruity/yeasty notes present. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a very good festbier style. All around nice robustness and balance of bready malts and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and pretty refreshing to drink with the mellowly/bitter drying finish. Very flavorful for the ABV, and not overly sweetness. Nicely clean and rich Pils/Munich malt showcase, with solid noble hop presence/balance. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.

2017 bottle shared at Lucky Bamboo. Pours a deep brown to black with a small bit of beige head that dissipates to a ring around the glass. Dark chocolate and coffee aromas dominate the nose with a hint of chili pepper as it warms. More cacao nib and roasty espresso notes with some faint vanilla on the palate, brownie-like texture. Quite a bit of chili heat remaining on the finish.

On tap. This beer has a clear gold color and a lacing head. Light hops in the aroma and flavor and balanced by medium sweet malt. This is an older style ipa, and by older I mean early 2000s. Not bad for a session beer. Balanced with a sweet malt after taste.

Pint can pours with a totally opaque dull deep gold body that supports a nice white head of foam. The aroma offers up dry clementine, cold pineapple, some floral hops and a sense of tropical fruitiness. The taste delivers both juicy citrus and tropical fruit notes as well as bitter grapefruit, floral hops and a bit of resiny grassiness. Nice.
