About
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has a wonderful mix of rum and coconut mostly, with some dark sugars, and no notice of the banana (thankfully?). Flavour definitely brings out the banana, with plenty of coconut, banana, rum barrels, dark sugars, and a touch of vanilla. Sounds like a shit idea, but it’s Modern Times and they nailed it. Wonderful cohesion, not abrasive at all. Excellent.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Very dark brown with no head. Woody rum barrel forward with soft thai banana chocolate backing, feint coconut, subtle hint of lime on the finish, a touch hot, mostly balanced, but not completely cohesive.

500mL bottle. Pours black with no head. Tons of roasted malt and bourbon barrels on the nose. Flavour has a ton of bourbon barrels and roasted malts. Fantastic beer, well-blended. Lacks subtelty, but the strength is well-calibrated. This is phenomenal.

Very dark brown. Rich dark malts, big barrel. Big umami character, rich dark malts, toastiness. The barrel is great here - accentuating the sweetness of the malt, touch of alcohol. Excellent.

2021 vintage. 22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma has a wonderful bourbon character upfront, with plenty of vanillin, and some dark sugars. Flavour has some buttery bourbon barrels, butterscotch, some caramel, dark sugars, and a touch of vanillin. Has almost a dried dark fruit character on the finish. Wonderfully constructed as usual.

Flavour has a nice cinnamon spiciness, complemented by dark dried fruits, coffee, rich bourbon barrels, and a touch of vanilla. Incredible blend of dates, cinnamon and bourbon especially. Sublime.
