Description
Modern Times is a 30bbl production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850 (see “Modern Times was..” for the full explanation), and (almost) all of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias.

Got in a trade with BeerBaron666. 16 ounce can into pint glass; no canning date, but should be fairly fresh. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge milk chocolate, fresh coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, oats, and roasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of coffee and dark/roast malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, fresh coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, oats, and roasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, oats, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roast malt and coffee flavors; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding coffee stout. All around awesome balance and robustness of fresh coffee and dark/roast malt flavors; and very smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Light amber color. Big citrusy, piney nose with clean pale malty backbone. First thing I think is quintessential West Coast IIPA. Big hoppy, lots of backbone, tangerines, pine. Such perfect balance, this is what IIPAs should be from So Cal. Big bitter finish with tangerines just lingering and lingering. Lovely.

Can from Craftshack Pours a crystal clear deep golden color with a smallish bubbly white head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of onion and floral, resiny, pine hops. Light spicy wheat malt deep in the background. Flavor follows the aroma quite well but allows the malt to come a bit further from the background. Spicy lightly tart wheat malt flavor offset with lots of green onion and resinous hop flavor. Moderate hop bitterness is never harsh. Medium to light body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a slick almost tart mouthfeel. I was pleasantly surprised by this brew, as I often don’t like wheat beer. Great spicy hoppy flavor and aroma.

A clear, dark golden beer topped by a small, off-white head. The aroma has the citrusy, piney hops dominating, with grapefruit and some pineapple. Not much maltyness. The flavor has a nice bitterness to go with the light malty sweetness. Pineapple, resins and grapefruit too. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, semi-dry. Lasting bitter finish. Some caramel all the way. A pretty nice one, not so very amber-tasting though. 140118
