Can thanks to Mark. It pours pale gold with a medium white head. The nose is hay, dough, grainy, herbal aspect and underlying sweetness. The taste is clean, bitter, grassy, grapefruit, white grape skin, gooseberry, spicy edge and some alcohol warmth with a dry, bitter finish. Interesting and pretty tasty.

Can from the brewery. 2013 version. Malty nose, caramel and some smoke. Lightly salty. Medium brown with a low head. Malty, smoky flavor, caramel, peat, peaches, orange. Interesting. Doesn’t all mesh so well, but still nice. Somewhat sweet, but still balanced.

Can, mail order from the brewery. Hoppy citrus aroma, grapefruit zest, wheat, dry minerals. Nice. Somewhat Belgian yeast nose. Cloudy deep golden with lace. Spicy, citrus flavor, wheat and biscuits, grapefruits, funky earthiness, very dry, with light minerals. Very drinkable and nice. Elegant. Very well done. Good solid bitterness at the finish. Best new beer from them in a while. Label says that bonito flakes are also used. Can’t really taste that! Maybe there is a touch of umami in the finish...

Can, mail order from the brewery. Nice amber malt aroma, caramel and chocolate with good American hops. Orange, grass, earth. Medium brown-orange with a low head. Mild flavor, orange, pine, caramel. Decent bitterness. Nice but not all that special. Really could be hoppier.

350 yen can from Asahiya. Maybe as I’d just had the Echigo Red Ale I picked up on different things. 5.5% the color was virtually identical a nice clear amber though the head was off-white. The aroma was malty with a hint of skunky funk over some spiciness. A bit rougher malt character than Echigo with hints of grass/hay which makes me think they either used some pilsner malt or an adjunct. Much more hop forward with the malts taking a back seat, I think this is more my speed...
