Description
Daisen G Beer is a craft beer brewery located in Tottori prefecture, in the Chugoku region, just north of Okayama. Located at the base of Mt. Daisen, which is more commonly known as Hōkifuji in the area, the brewery opened in 1997 as an off-shoot of the sake producing company Kumezakura Shuzō and San-in Sanso Corporation, a company that deals with high-pressure gas. The local area is famous for its clear spring water, sourced from the snow at the top of the mountain, and its black soil, kuroboku in Japanese, which is said to be some of the most fertile in Japan. This fertile soil has resulted in Daisen G Beer being able to grow its own barley, in the form of Daisen Gold, in the spring; Daisen G Beer’s own hops, called Weihen Hop, which are harvested in the summer, and also Yamadanishiki, a sake yeast that is used in the production of the beers such as Daisen G Yagō.

Draught at the flower parade, Hirsohima. Hazy reddish brown, small creamy head. Light grapefruit aroma. Caramelly with some molasses. Fair amounts of grapefruity hops and a slight citric backdrop. Cean rounded mouthfeel and quite significant bitterness.

Light. Not very hoppy, nor interesting. Light bitter finish. Not much to say about this beer, so I am writing to take up space.

Tap at Beer Belly. A white bock, light golden/brown color. Pungently sweet aroma of bananas and clove. Amazingly rich flavor of bananas, spices, cloves, other fruits. Very sweet, but balanced well by alcohol and sour traces. Excellent and very interesting.

Draught at GJBF, Osaka 2008. Special aged version. Said to be aged for 1 ½ years, and it tasted that way. Amazingly smooth, with mature, port-like aged tones. Strong, rich, and smoky. Medium sweetness with dark fruits, medium to strong roasted flavor. Excellent.

Draught at Barley in Nishinomiya, Nov 07. Strong smoked aroma with a bit of fruit. A slightly fruity ale flavor with a bit of hops, good smoke but less than a rauch. Slightly sour. Sourish, smoky and hops finish. Relatively light smoking, and not much other flavors, a bit shallow. Good, but not at all outstanding. Keep trying.

Draught at the GJBF, Osaka 2008. A light ale with high wheat content, aimed at a Saison taste, but comes out as a rather bland wheat ale. Good idea but must be judged a failure at the stage. Not nice. Try again.

Draught at GJBF, Osaka 2008. Huge fruit: cherries, dark fruit. Caramel and decent malt, rather sweet. Decent hops but not really strong. Very nice and interesting, one of the most fruity beers I have tried, yet well balanced.

Draught at Eni-bru. Bland pale-ale type beer, not much in terms of either malt or hops. I have no idea what is supposed to be Scottish about this. Very disappointing for a brewery that is usually pretty decent.

Aroma of dryish amber malts and yeast, earthy, grass. Lighter hops, with pine, and a touch of citrus. Medium copper color with a thin head. Malty flavor, caramel and a bit of fruit. A bit of peppery hops to balance. Definitely malt-focused, yet the malts are not terribly complex. Citrus, peppery hops finish is not very strong but lingers. Interesting, well balanced session beer. Very English in style.

Bottle. Hoppy aroma, sweet and slightly buttery, with golden malts. Crisp. Pale Yellow color, almost a proper head. Hoppy, fruity, rich flavor. Sweet malts in the back, with biscuits. Light but very flavorful, and a bit sweet. Slightly creamy. Dry, hoppy finish. Decent pils. Raised the score by 0.3 in 2016. This beer has gotten much better over the years, and now it is quite excellent. Probably deserves even higher, but I will wait until I get another chance to rate it.
