Description
Daisen G Beer is a craft beer brewery located in Tottori prefecture, in the Chugoku region, just north of Okayama. Located at the base of Mt. Daisen, which is more commonly known as Hōkifuji in the area, the brewery opened in 1997 as an off-shoot of the sake producing company Kumezakura Shuzō and San-in Sanso Corporation, a company that deals with high-pressure gas. The local area is famous for its clear spring water, sourced from the snow at the top of the mountain, and its black soil, kuroboku in Japanese, which is said to be some of the most fertile in Japan. This fertile soil has resulted in Daisen G Beer being able to grow its own barley, in the form of Daisen Gold, in the spring; Daisen G Beer’s own hops, called Weihen Hop, which are harvested in the summer, and also Yamadanishiki, a sake yeast that is used in the production of the beers such as Daisen G Yagō.

Draught at the Microbrewer’s Beer Festa in Hiroshima. Lots of fruit, with very little hop presence. Interesting flavors of yeast and unmalted barley. Slightly sweet. Not great, but certainly interesting and different.

Draught at Beer Belly. Very fruity IPA with cherries, muscat, and lots of hops. Good caramel malt flavor. Smooth body. Quite nice indeed. --- Beer merged from original tick of IPA (~2008) on 15 Sep 2008 at 03:33 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 8. I found this weak, boring and yellow. Faint Belgian yeasty notes in the nose, but body is way too light. Small sample, but remember not being impressed.

Deep copper. Earthy, fruity, citrus, and some sweet malts. pretty nice bitterness on the tongue. More malty than I expected, but nice anyway.

Deep brown with just the edges showing light. This brew is topped with a mid size, rocky tan head. Lightly roasted, dark fruits, molasses, and heavy malts. Flavor is a bit lighter than I was expecting. Malty, roasted, some molasses, and a bit chalky in the finish. Hides the 9%. Solid.

@ GJBF 2007. Light brown color with a thick head. Aroma is good, roasted malts, cocoa, caramel, dark fruits, but some grass was also in there which was a little distracting. Body was a little thin. Molasses, cocoa, sweet malts, roasted, raisins. Good stout, though a little lacking in the flavor.

Brown mahogany color. A faint hint of smoke and nuts. Mildly sour start, but then smoked flavors. I really notice how the smoked flavors are very similar to the smoke character in Bamberg beers, but the volume is definetely turned down on this one. As the beer warms it gets a little too sweet for the style. A good attempt, but more work needed.

@ GJBF 2007. I’m suprised my notes are as extensive (and legible) as they are this far into the festival... Hazy hay in color. Like many Japanese Weizens the banana aroma is fairly strong, but unlike many others it’s not nearly as sweet, which is nice. Yeast, and cloves round it out. Medium to full body, smooth, but spicy. Flavor was spices, yeast, cloves, fruity, banana, and a nicely spiced finish. Found this to be an very good weizen

@ GJBF 2007. Gold with a white head. Aroma is slightly hoppy, some toasty malts, and light floral notes. Flavor is similar, with some fruit tones thrown in. Light hop finish. Thought this was pretty solid.

Golden color. A touch of toasted malt. Moderate malty mouth with toasted malts, but nothing too special. Refreshing moderately bitter finish. Kind of like a toasted lager, but with a ale yeast and a bit heavier.
