27/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (330ml bottle). Dorata carica, brillante e limpida, con buon cappello di schiuma biancastra, morbida e poco persistente. Al naso sentori di malto, lievito, luppolo agrumato. In bocca è ben bilanciata, molto morbida, più "English" che "American" a mio avviso, a dispetto dei luppoli, con gradazione alcolica assai modesta. Corpo modesto, finale corto, carbonazione moderata. Gradevole e rinfrescante, ma non convince appieno. Mi aspettavo di più.

Bottle, 13C. Black with a coat of light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, plums, vanilla, alcohol, licorice, pine. Texture is a bit oily - surprisingly light. Remaining carbonation is slight and really nice: this has bottled well. Taste has cocoa, roasted bitterness, coffee, vanilla, white pepper, dark rum. Not very sweet at first - the roasted character is not aggressive, but is persistent and there all the way through. About half way through the glass the sweetness and alcohol start to creep up as it warms - I’d start cooler next time. The fruit in the nose doesn’t really show up much in the mouth. A little boozy at the end, along with the chocolate, roasted malt and some pine.

Bottle. Clear mid brown with a large lasting beige head. Low remaining carbonation. Aroma of pine, citrus, grapes, gooseberries, cut grass, a hint of chocolate and roast. Taste is dry with deeper roasted flavours and more pine than suggested by the smell. Lingering pine bitterness. I liked the way the roasty side and the IPA are brought together but left just slightly dissonant.

Bottle at Papsø’s
Cloudy brownish color; generous head. Very nice aroma of malt and hops, a bit cheesy, sharp, phenolic, but interesting. Strong body, with a good full malt flavor and caramel, some vanilla oak, and a strong hopping too. Very good American styled Barley Wine, powerful.

Tap. Hazy amber with an inch of thick off-white head. Complex hoppy aroma with nectarines, lychees, gooseberries, kumquats, pine. Maybe some biscuit lurking there too. Only brooding hop aromas, nothing heady - but nice all the same.Taste has modest sweetness, alcohol, light biscuit, lots of stone fruits, passionfruit, lychees. Bitter finish is fruity with some pine, but falls away quickly. Some heat from the alcohol at the end. The Icon is much more my sort of thing.

Tap. Gold with a medium white head. Delicate floral aroma with a some bready grain, a little pepper and lemon. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Light grainy malt is moderately sweet with a little lager sourness. Modest bitterness. Neither particularly bold or crisp, but OK.

From a 330ml bottle on 18/5/2011.Pours a light golden colour, and doesn’t look much like a typical wheat beer. Has a slight aroma of spice, yeast, bread and citrus fruit. The flavours are fairly subdued - a touch of wheat and some citrus, followed by a slight bitterness. Given that Murray’s gear is usually excellent, this was a bit of disappointment.for me. A little too bland and one dimensional to be a real winner.

Pours dark brown with a large lasting head leaving lots of lacing.Nose shows plenty of hops, lots of tropical fruit in there; peach, passionfruit. Underneath is heaps of nutty malt.The hops take a lesser role as a flavour, instead the nutty and chocolate malt is quite quite bold. Howerver, there’s still a fair whack of fruit in there and the finish is pretty dry with a big hoppy bitterness.As usual for Murray’s, I find the carbonation to over the top.

Bottle, 9C. Deep clear brown with a large light beige head that settles to a rocky half inch. Aroma of spicy toffee, kumquats, a little pine, walnuts. Taste has lots of toffee and some nuts with the sweetness restrained by bitterness kicking in early. A leafy taste - tobacco? - that I didn’t really think fitted because it obscured the malts contributes to a dry, moderately bitter finish that linger. Good, but not quite harmonious.

Bottle. Poured very slightly hazy golden with a big white head. Lovely floral aroma with a hint of vanilla. Mouth-filling fine carbonation gave great mouth-feel. Refreshing tangy start to the flavour gives way to reasonable easy drinking but ultimately unimpressive middle and slight bitter finish. Overall, very drinkable.
