Description
Ronald started working as a brewer in 1990, at brewery De Raaf. Few years later he lefts the Netherlands for Finland. He stayed in the beer business in various roles, and after a short break, he returned in 2015 to start The Flying Dutchman Nomad Brewing Company, to brew his own recipes at de Proefbrouwerij and Brouwerij Anders. He brews out of love for beer, and only works with the best and most passionate people. That’s why his beers are exceptional – full of character and flavour.

Tap at Pub Rooster, Oulu. Colour is clear orange with small white head. Aromas and flavors: Some pine, caramel, some fruits, hops and malts. Nice flavors but maybe too simple for me.

At Proof in Ghent, during their first Craft Beer Matinee. Shared by Ster, cheers! Creamy, dense, pale greish beige, very stable, lightly lacing head, very dark bronze colour, blackish in general appearance but still translucent under bright light, with reddish burgundy tinge. Aroma of coffee grounds, bitter chocolate, grapefruit peel, cedar wood, blackcurrant, butterscotch, salmiak, liquorish, black olive, exotic pepper. Dried fruit (fig, raisin) in the onset, blackcurrant-like sourishness, thin umami edge, softish carbo, supple and lightly oily mouthfeel. Nutty, bitterly toasted maltiness ensues, with a caramelly sweetish aspect, rounded; toasted bitterness in the end pairs well with a peppery, grapefruity, lightly piney, resinous hop bitterness, which, in all, remains fairly gentle for this style; alcohol remains as good as completely hidden. Perfectly alright for a BIPA, but a softer, more approachable example, I’d say the perfect introduction to this style.

Oak-aged IPA - a somewhat paradoxical concept at first sight - again with an extremely elaborate name like all of this guy’s beers. Tasted at Proof, cheers Kristof. Moussy, snow white, lightly lacing, egg-white head on top of a cloudy orange blonde beer with deeper amber hue. Aroma of orange, sweet onions, toasted garlic even, green tomato, pine resin, slight wet oak, stale sweat, dried mango, grapefruit peel, moldy lemons, biscuit. Vivid, soft fruity onset, hints of green banana, lime and slight lychee, medium carbonation, smooth and ’fluffy’, supple mouthfeel. Biscuity and cereally malt core, built under a resinous, aromatic, softly peppery, drying hoppiness, producing pleasant grapefruit, mango and pine notes retronasally; as with the other oak chip-aged beers from this brewer, there is only a very subtle hint of vanilla-ish oaky tannins in the background, very subtle. Elegant and interesting IPA.

At Proof in Ghent. Moussy, cream white, bubbly, more or less coarse head over a hazy salmon pink-hued orangey blonde beer. Aroma has a lot of ’real’ flower impressions: the hibiscus is very clear, tea-ish, reminiscent of dried hibiscus flowers that are sometimes added to a glass of champagne; the rosehip is pronounced as well, and both are embedded in impressions of chalk or even gypsum, sour fruit yoghurt, soap, pink pepper, lime zest, buttermilk, very faint wet oak. Softly tart lactic acidity from the start, yoghurty and mildly drying, very Berliner Weisse-like with medium carbonation and some subtle sweetish peach flavors surrounded by gooseberry and lime sourish accents; smooth, rounded mouthfeel, soapy ’wheatiness’, lightly bready, ending with a lot of retronasal floral aromas, a lingering rosehip flavor, the persisting mildly drying tartness and something chalky which seems to appear in many Berliner Weisses; the oak chips remain a faraway echo. Elegant, ’summery’ and almost ’feminine’ quencher, pleasantly tart, fairly clean and very Berliner Weisse-like in its basis.

Coffee, cocoa and vanilla stout, tasted at Proof in Ghent during their Craft Beer Matinee. Dense, moussy, lacing, stable, yellowish beige head, black robe with translucent mahogany reddish-brown edges. Aroma reveals the added ingredients in a genuine, explicit manner, with actual coffee powder or cappuccino, vanilla and molten black chocolate as the first impressions, later accompanied by hints of cloves, oaky tannins accentuating the added vanilla, dried beef stock, toast, fig. Rounded dried fruit sweetness in the onset, raisin and dried banana, soft carbo, notably creamy, oily mouthfeel, more or less full-bodied and fit for an 8% stout, nutty and very chocolatey malts fill the mouth cavity, with the chocolate aspect accentuated by the cocoa nibs, sweet vanilla in the end is in turn accentuated by a subtle but clearly noticeable vanilla-ish oak flavor with some drying tannins, but not becoming thoroughly dry, instead remaining fairly sweet, caramelly and chocolatey, still balanced out by a dash of peppery hops; the coffee rises up retronasally but not too dominantly so. Very pleasant, rounded, clean, sweet stout, in which none of the added ingredients overpowers the rest; in fact, they are very well integrated in the coffeeish and chocolatey qualities of the malt and the vanilla touch of the oak. Clever beer.
