A fine beer from a local brewer! THICK and black (alomst chunky). Virtually no head. Slightly roasted aroma, with only the tiniest hint of vanilla. This is beer? Tastes like cold coffee to me! Thick and rich in the mouthfeel department. MMmmm. Drinkable! But filling.

Paid $3.79 for a 1pt 6 oz single. Brownish amber, with a two-inch fluffy head. It retains well and provides nice lacing. Fantastic smell- typical IPA smell here, just extra nice. SWEET and refreshing grapefruit is the big kick here. Smells very tropical and lovely. Nice taste- not mindblowing. Bitter & hoppy, and actually a bit of a heavy malt in there. Kinda thin in the mouth. Great smell to this one, wish the taste matched the odor- but really, it's not bad at all.

Paid $2.79 for a bomber. Nice deep amber with a huge head. A bit IPAish in the nose. Sweet citrus, slightly hoppy. Bittersweet, tinge of an IPA, but far from it. Slightly citrusy, but lacking a lot of hop. Nice, but not overwhelming. Would make a great session brew. But not hearty enough (or original enough) to make me buy it again, other than to drink all night.

YEAY, finally, I found some more brews from Buckeye. NICE dark amber brown- small head. Nice, sweet smelling, maybe appley-- but probably not. I keep smelling apples tonight. Huh. Kinda dirty taste. Not really what I expected (or wanted). Kinda funky, and not overly pleasant. They can do better.

Paid $2.79 for a 1pt 6oz bottle. Great medium amber color with a HUGE frothy head. Sure, it takes awhile for it to settle, but that's part of the fun of a good IPA for me.... looking at it, it looking at me, tempting me, teasing me, telling me to break the rules and just swig the damn thing. NO! I must resist, I must smell this beast first. Small smell, not overpowering like some. And in some ways that's good, but I really like a heafty odor from my IPAs. This one has hints of orange more than grapefruit. Uh... bitter and hoppy without much other flavor. Kind of disappointing, I must admit. I swear, I almost taste soap in there. Well... not all beers are winners. Too bad the appearance was the best thing about this one.

Very dark brown in colour with a thin tan head. 80% opaque. Roasted malt, vanilla & caster sugar in the aroma. Light to Medium-bodied; Decent roasted malt tastee with some sweet characteristics finishing with a metallic twang. Aftertaste bittered from the malt, sweetened from the sugars and tainted by the metal. Overall, a good beer, but could use some work! I am very lucky to have sampled this beer...large thanks go out to Jah_noth for this bottle from Ohio-Thanks Dan! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle on 01-November-2003.

Another solid IPA by the folks at Buckeye. This shaggy, burnt-orange headed (err...bodied) brute definitely does not have peace on the mind, considering the way the hops assault the palate. This is a very piney IPA with sharp grapefruit-like acids biting the tongue. Medium-bodied. Malt sweetness develops beneath the hops as the beer warms. The Hippie apparently rolled in a wheat field at Woodstock, but I'm not detecting any. I do prefer my IPAs a bit fruitier and not so bitter, but this is still good stuff.

This is an outstanding IPA. Brings to mind quality offerings by Sierra Nevada (Celebration Ale), Bell's (Two-Hearted Ale), and Dogfish Head (90 Minute IPA). Has a cloudy red body topped with an off-white head. The citrusy aroma (grapefruit notes esp.) opens up as the beer warms and allows sweet malts to join the festivities. 76 hits the tongue with earthy, citric hops balanced by medium maltiness. Citrus, including that orange peel, is especially noticeable at the back of the tongue and in the aftertaste. That aspect reminded me of Celebration Ale. To sum it up, this beer kicks all available ass, then goes out and finds more ass to kick until its foot is numb and its thirst for ass-kicking is quenched.

Mucho gracias to alcfron for this amazing brew. 2002 bottle (the first of many hopefully): Pours a deep orange with a medium off-white head and nice cascade and thin lacing. Unbelievably floral hops aroma with a hint of citrus. As for the flavor, well the relentless hops assualt is second only to Ruination as far as I am concerned. That may be why I actually like this one more. While the hops are definitely first and foremost, they don't go overboard as much as Stone's version. It made for what I now consider to be the IPA to beat in my book. There are also underlying malt, caramel and toasty tones that balance it very well. I was hoping I had saved the best for last in this Buckeye tasting session - mission accomplished! Superb.
