Description
Buckeye Brewing began brewing in 1997. The flagship beer, Hippie IPA, was first bottled in 1998. We are one of only three breweries bottling in Cleveland, OH. While well known for hoppy Pale and IPA, other styles shine as well. Buckeye produces everything from German-style Kolsch to Belgian-style Saison. Buckeye’s bottled products can be found in quality bottle shops across Ohio. Buckeye currently brews on a 15 barrel Century brew house. Stay tuned for updates on our front page.

Thanks to alcfron for this interesting brew. This is the first Buckeye beer that was in a 12oz, not 22oz bottle. That may be for the best because this beer was a little disappointing to me. Pours practically black with a thick light beige head. As with Stoney Creek''s version, this is on the carbonated side for a Porter, and the vanilla is not very prevalent in the aroma or flavor. As a matter of fact I liked this one less. It did get noticeably better as it warmed, and I ended up drinking it warmer than I usually drink Porters. Flavor of coffee and malt with underlying sour milk. Finish was a little dry which indeed kept this from being too hard to drink. Either way this won''t be high on my list the next time I get Buckeye beer.

Cask version at Barley’s 3rd Annual Mini RAF (04/16/05): Dark, black appearance with a thin and foamy light brown head that lasts and lasts. Abnormally hoppy nose, to the point where a blind aroma test would make it hard to pick this one out of a crowd of IPAs. Some coffee aroma as well. Rich body and again the bitter hops rush out of the beer. I could taste the Stout underneath - Coffee, chocolate and malt flavors were there but they were hiding like a cat under the bed after it knocked your favorite pint glass off the counter and broke it. After having said that, this is a damn good beer, probably my favorite of the day. While this version pretty much breaks category it’s hard to nitpick when it tastes so damn good. The amalgam of styles is a controlled chaos that just works. The finish is long and bitter and consists mostly of roasted coffee. I’d love to have this again.
12/26/02 (4.1): Thanks to alcfron for this 22oz beast. Mammoth is an apt name for this beer, it is big and...tusky! Pours almost black with a medium thin beige head. Strong coffee aroma, especially as it warms. So far so good. Strong roasted coffee flavor over chocolate, malt and caramel. A very good blend. While not overly rich or robust, this is an easy-drinking Stout.

Thanks to alcfron for this otherwordly 22oz Marzen. I wonder if it is so named because of the color? It isn''t much of a stretch to say this beer is "Mars-colored" orangish-red. Medium-thick off-white head that lingered, and decent lacing. Sweet caramel malt aroma. Slick and sweet flavor of malt that threatens to become too much, but luckily there is enough hops finish to keep it from being too sticky-sweet. Another decent beer from Buckeye.

Thanks to alcfron for this good 22oz APA. Pours a deep amber color with a thick off-white head. Pleasantly hoppy and citrusy aroma. Flavor is a rather subdued blend of hops and caramel malt. I think it could have been a little more robust, especially considering how hoppy Buckeye seems to like their other brews. Still, this wasn''t bad at all.

2002 Bottle: Thanks to alcfron to sending me 22oz of holiday joy! First of all this is the first ever beer I have had that had a wax-sealed top. How cool is that? Dark copper color with a thin light beige head. Sediment left in the bottle. I am flabbergasted that they add no spice to this beer, as the aroma is a spiced mix of clove, corriander and burnt orange. Both the flavor and texture are a rich blend of sweet malt, spices, and fruits. This is a great addition to the grand tradition of holiday brews.

Yowza! Thanks to alcfron to sending this to me since I have been too lazy to drive the 2 hours to Buckeye Brewing. This 22oz beast pours a nice clear copper color with a medium off-white head and some lacing. Mild effervescence it notable, it makes the beer much more pleasing to the eye. Strong hops aroma will make you blink. Appropriately biting hops flavor makes me look forward to trying the ''76. Just a pinch of toasted malt and caramel keep the hops from being overwhelming. Nice dry finish. This is a good IPA.

Thanks to alcfron for this 22oz bad boy. 2002 bottle. This is a good representation of the style, even though Wheat beers are not among my favorites. Pours a murky, hazy grapefruit juice color with no head or lacing to speak of. Aroma of pineapple and other citrus fruits. Crisp, clean flavor is sweet with a tart finish. Again, I am not really a fan of Hefe''s but this is a good example of the right way to make one.
