12 ounce bottle from Bestway in Greensboro, NC and shared at the 5/7/11 DC Ratebeer gathering. Pours a hazy red-orange color with a medium sized frothy pink head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of tart, earthy and sweet notes with berries and Lifesavers candy. The taste is tart beres and an earthy, slightly vegetal finish. Medium bodied.

16 ounce bottle from Bestway in Greensboro, NC. Love that store. Pours a clear ruby red color with a thin fizzy tan head.Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of raisin, toffee, chocolate and some bready and spicy notes. Almost smells chewy, if that makes any sense. The taste is bready notes, banana, raisin and some metallic hop notes that are out of balance and tend to interfere rather than complement. Thin-medium bodied. Smells nice, decent otherwise.

16 oz. bottle, $2 at Ray’s. Pours pale malts, a bit of copper in the center of the glass, and a steady stream of bubbles that just breaks at the surface. Smell is malty sweet, and just a little bit sweaty. Hints of sour fruit in the rear of the nose. Taste is loaded with tripel sweetness. Sweaty impression in the mouth, too. Still, the malt feels light, except for a thread of alcohol. Hints of orange peel and coriander.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Clear amber with a medium off-white head. Aroma has nice toasty maltiness, some bread, caramel notes, a bit of nuts, light grainy hints, and some slightly floral hops. Sweetish malty flavor with some caramel and a bit of toasted bread, finishes moderately bitter with some hops, somewhat floral/herbal. Medium-bodied. A nice quaffable Lager.

Purchased at Breeze Thru Liquors in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed on a cool, rainy mid-June early evening in Chicago, IL where I might as well drink a cold weather beer. Appearance is pitch black and thick with almost no head, just a tan rim around the glass. Aroma of licorice, roasted malt, coffee, and a light fruit (bananas in a previous review, I agree). Taste is thick, hints of roasted malt and the coffee comes out much more, I can also get the fig in the flavor. Not super thick though, I’ve had thicker RIS’ for sure. A belcher too, not too carbonated but it’s apparent. Not bad stuff, not the greatest RIS out there for sure.

22oz bomber shared by CaptainCougar. Brown, thin oily head. Not bad for a Sprecher. The chocolate tones smooth out and cover up the house off flavors. Rather sessionable, not much behind the bitter chocolate and hop tones. Drinkable indeed, a go to beer from Sprecher. Dry and well executed enough, sort of one-dimensional for the style though.

Etwas muffiger Abgang, stark getreidig. 8/7/9/6/10/7

1 pint bottle. Pours dark orange with lots of particulates. The head is thin and beige. The aroma is intense citrus, apples, apricots, brown sugar, and allspice. The flavor is a nice malt backbone and strong, level bitterness. The palate is creamy and a little astringent. The carbonation is light and lively. The finish is long and bitter. Overall, a fine example of IIPA.
