I would have guessed this to be a stout or a porter, but a dark lager? Never. The head is tan and frothy, and the aroma is roasty and chocolately. The flavor is quite malty and complex, with intense roasted/smoke flavors, caramel, coffee, licorice, and some others I can't quite identify. If all schwarzbeirs were like this, I'd be trying them a lot more often.

This is the first brewery I've seen that actually sells its beer in pints, so I had to get a few of their beers. This is a decent stout, but not complex enough to be a true imperial. It's a little overly sweet, but in an artificial way; it kind of tastes like black coffee with too much sweet and low added to it. The finish carries qualities of aspartame as well, but with some slight licorice notes. A decent try, but it falls just a little short.

I'll do you one better, cranes - I didn't care for this at all. Light copper, sugary, ever so slightly cidery. Sweet, flowery, bubblegummy and very sugary. No balance.

Dark brown. Big burly aroma is very appetizing. Nice bready taste, with hints of chocolate in the relatively dry finish. Slightly fizzier than I would like but overall this is tasty.

Dark brown; toasty, a little thin, has a whole grain bread crustiness to it. A decent porter, but nowhere near making it as a stout.

Light bronze; aroma like chocolate chip cookie dough, with slight notes of smoke and rye (whiskey); evenly balanced, malty palate - firm, but finishing dry and smooth. Well-made. Perfect for rainy days in May.

Intense, complex maltiness. Loads of flavour. One of the world's best schwarzbiers.
