(Bottle) Good looking beer - black with a decent dense tan head. Nice aroma that matches the description - it’s clearly porter and coffee Nice palate too - smooth bodied with plenty of gentle carbonation. Taste is a nice balance of coffee and porter too. There’s some nice malty doughy creamy notes that balance the porter well. The finish is mainly coffee. Unusual, interesting, very drinkable.

Bottle, 13C. Prince Wine Essendon - it’ll be long gone (from there and probably anywhere else). Pretty much black with an inch of tan head that lasts OK and laces well. Aroma of mocha, roasted hazelnuts, vanilla, sherry - not what I expected. Sweet with some less than fully integrated whisky. More roasted flavours and grass than suggested by the aroma, but the praline/ nougat thing is still a big part of the story. There’s a lick of booze and a decent amount of bitterness at the end that stops it being too dessert-like. Silky texture. After a time there’s a spiced Indian milk caramel element. Very much barrel forward, as the kiddies say. And just a bit much so for me for a stout. But a lovely and accomplished beer.

Bottled (backlog) Goldeny amber colour, small white head. aroma is floral, some crystal malts and mild biscuity notes. Flavour is crystal malts, floral and some wooden notes along with some herbs.

375ml can into pint glass. Sweet acidic nose. Dark ruby red beer with foamy tan head. Fizzy mouthfeel, medium body. Finish is chocolate and coffee, quite dry. Nice if unexceptional stout.

From a 640ml bottle on 15/8/2015. Pours a deep brown with a big head which disappears quickly. Has a relatively strong pleasant coffee aroma. The flavour is all about coffee too but it’s otherwise quite mild and a touch bland. There’s not much roastiness or bitterness to be had, with a just a bit of sweet chocolate and milk accompanying the coffee. The body is a bit thin and the carbonation average. All up, a bit disappointing, as other MG Cross Breeds and Rare Breeds have been better.

Bottle. dark brown with a small light tan head. Aroma of fresh medium roasted coffee, dark sugars. Fairly light bodied. The beer gets a bit more of a look in in the taste, but the main show is the nice coffee. There’s some bread, chocolate, orange peel and a mildly spicy bitterness at the end. More as it warms a little. But mainly coffee.

Bottle (Slowbeer). Stupidly expensive, bought because when Hightail appeared it was a green shoot after a savage frost and I’m still grateful. Goodwill is almost exhausted by all that fucking wax. Amber with a modest cream head that lasts indefinitely. Aroma of vanilla caramels, light spices, whisky. It’s like the whisky is a trailing afterthought that turns to reverie. Sweet lightish toffee, butterscotch, some dried fruit - golden raisins, those little wizened wild figs - vanilla, orange peel, very mild spices. A little warm waft of whisky and bitterness at the end. Ignore all that fruit complexity stuff, it really comes across as very straightforward: just a strong pale ale with some meshing whisky overtones. Nonchalant?

From a 375ml can on 9/7/2015 (ABV listed as 5%, no reference to Rare Breed). Pours dark brown with a medium head. Has a mild nose of coffee and chocolate. In the mouth, there’s light roasted malt, cocoa, chocolate, coffee and vanilla, with a moderate bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. A decent sweetish stout.

330ml bottle into glass. Mild toffee malt nose. Red/brown beer with thin tan coloured head. Medium carbonation. Zingy mouthfeel. Creamy malty taste with hoppy finish. A little pepper perhaps. It’s like a standard UK bitter with standard Aussie carbonation. Not outstanding but very drinkable.
