Elegant coffee nose, light citrus, chocolate. Pitch black, shiny, lovely fine light brown head. Fruity coffee flavor, oranges, roasted malt, chocolate. Orange comes across quite like citrus hops. Interesting. Not so stout-like, with a light body, and somehow feels like a Black IPA with coffee in it. Quite likeable—different and original.

Tap at Tenma. Shiny pitch black, lovely fine, thick head with long lasting legs. Creamy chocolate nose, lactic, though a bit faint. Sweet chocolate flavors, café au lait, nicely roasted but not burnt. Good bitter finish. Some hints of orange and other fruits. Very nice, with great drinkability.

On tap at Beer Belly Temma. 5% 600 yen for a half-pint. A thick inky black pour with a foamy tan head. The aroma is of a rich roast coffee bean variety. Think waiting in line at a coffee roasters. Smooth but thin bodied, the aroma has a hint of oranges at the front of the mouth then the roast coffee flavor kicks into gear before leaving you more hints of fruit in the finish. A well done beer, it is so easy to drink you’d almost think it is a non-alcoholic iced coffee!

550 yen, on cask as part of the Real Ale Fest at Beer Belly Edobori. 5% and hoppier than their English Bitter(I asked if it was the same) this poured in a wall of muddy beige bubbles climbing up the glass making me think of a nitro beer which then settled into a lovely clear deep reddish brown. The color is so deep from a distance it looks black. Nice light citrusy hop bouquet with a bready malt backbone. The mouthfeel is soft, silky smooth while the beer’s medium bodied. The taste is citrus, lemon, lime then some malty caramel/chocolate + breadiness before finish with a mild hop bitterness. Solidly made, satisfying, tasty even but on the average side. The best thing about it was that visual pow I got from the cask pour.

Cask, Part of Real Ale Month at Beer Belly Temma. 550 yen for a half-pint. It pours a clear light copper-gold with a thin filmy head. A nice sansho minty aroma rises from the glass - really intriguing. A great soft silky light body with a refreshing sansho minty taste, then some earthiness that is followed by citrusy hops, the malts aren’t all that evident except for a light graham biscuity quality. As it warmed up it got a bit floral as well. Well balanced, exceptionally drinkable I like it!

330ml bottle from drinkmonger. Hazy amber orange pour, nice head and lacing. Lots of orange and mandarin on the nose, cream and biscuits. Taste brings it all together nicely. Underrated.
